I'm a UChicago graduate (BA and MA in History), former graduate teaching/research assistant at UCSB's history department, and professional journalist whose writing has appeared in national and major city publications. As a teaching assistant, I designed lesson plans, led discussion sections, graded assignments, and worked with professors to shape the content and structure of their courses. My coursework has covered Ancient World History, Medieval and Early Modern Europe, and Modern World History. Previously, I was an online tutor for MAST Tutoring, training director for UChicago's debate team, and informal consultant for Hong Kong International School's humanities department. My tutoring experience has revolved around preparing students to excel in AP classes and exams--World History, US History, US Govt., European History, and Comparative Politics--and helping them write essays for classes and applications. I have extensive knowledge and insight in the various subjects that I have studied as supporting fields, professional news coverage, out of personal interest, in classes, or out of teaching necessity. These subjects include international relations, colonization, political economy, mass social movements, and history in modern nationalistic discourse. In writing, I bring additional experience as an award-winning debater who has trained and been trained in argumentative and persuasive techniques such as weighing, framing, and case-writing.
Although there are a few principles of teaching that I think are most helpful for a student, I can easily adapt based on the student's objectives. I believe in guiding a student to an correct/insightful answer rather than simply telling them what it is. I also think that providing theoretical/legal/religious/etc. context and logic to factual information helps students develop not only a deeper understanding of the subject, but also a better sense of intuition of what a specific answer might be even if they have not memorized it.
