About Alison

Bio

My tutoring sessions are dynamic, fun and relevant. My students are eager to do well but may be distracted, discouraged or overwhelmed, lacking the foundational skills they need to get organized, focus and complete assignments effectively.

During our time together, we'll work to build reading, comprehension, writing, editing and study skills. Every student has a best way to learn. Once we find it, their confidence, participation and interest in learning grows exponentially.

For 20+ years, I was a volunteer tutor at the East Harlem School at Exodus House, Grades 4-8. I have worked with college students to edit their papers for a more powerful presentation and grade. I have tutored adults to pass their GED exams and ESL students to grasp material in an unfamiliar language.

Besides tutoring, I am a grief resilience coach, bestselling author of The Bad Widow Guide to Life After Loss: Moving Through Grief to Live and Love Again, Grief BeLIEF podcast co-host and global speaker. I have been a proofreader and editor since 1999 for medical, legal, advertising and publishing firms, and was an editorial assistant at the UN for the 2021 General Assembly.

I live in Manhattan and love exploring, reading, writing, walking in nature, global travel, art, and open mic poetry and music.

Approved Subjects

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

My current students include children from 1st grade through 7th grade and I love reluctant readers most of all. It's important to build a good foundation by having students read aloud, write key points from assignments or books, learn vocabulary, beginning parts of speech and develop good study skills. Students need to have confidence to participate in class and I help them get enthusiastic about learning.
English

English

I graduated NYU with a BA in English. I have tutored students of all ages, K-12 through adult, to improve reading, comprehension of materials, writing, test-taking and study skills. My students gain confidence, improve their ability to focus and follow through on assignments, participate in class and get better grades after working with me.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have worked with college students on their longer papers to proofread for spelling errors, edit for sense and continuity, reduce word counts and polish for a better grade. I have been a proofreader and editor for advertising agencies, specializing in the medical, legal, consumer and financial industries. I was an assistant editor for the UN General Assembly.
Reading

Reading

I am an expert in helping my students understand what they are reading, including what's happening, who the characters are and what the conflict is. Working with me, they learn how to answer homework questions effectively and communicate the details that matter clearly. Students who struggle with reading tend to ignore punctuation and read with a flat tone, which makes the text harder to follow and boring. By modeling how to read aloud with expression, all that changes and reading becomes fun.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

Improve study and test prep skills to get ready for the SATs. I also work with students to prepare their college essays. We work with a variety of the usual SAT books, analyzing texts, improving comprehension and building reading and writing skills.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

Beyond my strong English, reading and writing tutoring competency, I am an expert in helping students study for these standardized tests. In my career, I have been a proofreader, copy editor and editor for advertising, legal, medical and publishing firms, as well as freelance. I myself read a 350-page book a day for fun so reading and writing are passions of mine and affect how interactively and dynamically I teach. I am also patient, thorough and very effective.
Study Skills

Study Skills

Improved study skills can mean the difference between getting assignments, papers and test prep done calmly and confidently, and being overwhelmed or disorganized with rushed work, missed deadlines and bad grades. My students learn how to assess the short-term and long-term assignments to be done, map out a plan to complete the work, including time for drafts and revisions, as needed, and get assignments done on time. Building a foundation of excellent study skills improves students' confidence and ability to focus attention on projects, and helps them improve their grades.
Writing

Writing

Learning how to write well is an essential skill that is a requirement for every grade through college and beyond. Unfortunately, many of my students struggle with organizing ideas into essays, grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary, deciding what to leave in and take out to make a stronger assignment. Reading and writing are foundational skills so teaching the basics is left out in any grade, like the function of a verb, subject, adjective or adverb, nothing makes sense. As a tutor, I help my students identify the missing parts and learn them fully so they can write more easily with confidence and clarity, which leads to better grades.
