New York University (NYU) (History, Film)
I have a broad knowledge of history that I’ve been working to expand ever since I was young. I pursued a rigorous education in many fields of history, getting a 5 on the World History and European History APs, 800s on the World History and US History SAT Subject Tests, and a degree in history from New York University. I worked for a time at the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History making educational videos to help train history teachers.
I also have substantial experience in both creative and academic writing. My second major at NYU was Film & Television, with a focus on screenwriting. Several of my short stories have been published in historical fiction anthologies by Paradox Books. My history studies involved writing academic papers on topics including the emergence of medieval communes in the Holy Roman Empire and the role of Enlightenment ideology in the Haitian Revolution.
I am comfortable teaching students of all ages-- my youngest student was 7 and my oldest was 94. I worked at a summer school teaching classes of 3rd-9th graders for three years and I have over 200 hours of experience as a tutor. Much of my tutoring work has been preparing students for standardized tests, including the APs, Regents, and SAT Subject Tests.
I also know how to juggle. I’ve never taught anyone to juggle, but hey, first time for everything. I have a broad knowledge of history that I’ve been working to expand ever since I was young. I pursued a rigorous education in many fields of history, getting a 5 on the World History and … Read more
Luke is a very patient and seriously invested tutor. He is careful to make sure concepts are mastered before moving forward. His knowledge exceeds the textbooks and he presents history as a compelling story. What a find!
It was a great first lesson with Luke today. He is the perfect fit for my daughter's current educational needs. He is patient and gentle in his approach, and thoroughly involved my daughter in the process of meaning and knowledgeable construction, allowing her to think more deeply and encouraging her to apply critical thinking to her projects.
My daughter just finished a series of tutoring sessions with Luke to help her prepare for the AP US history exam. Luke was tremendously effective. My daughter mostly wanted help preparing for the writing portions of the exam. Luke read her practice essays and showed her specifically how to improve her theses and the choice and organization of the material that she included. He also showed her strategies for writing answers to essays questions where she only had partial knowledge of the relevant material. Finally, he reviewed the syllabus and reading material from her high school U.S. history class and prepared material for her to fill in the major content areas that would be included on the AP exam that had not been covered in her class. My daughter went into the exam confident and ready to succeed.
Finally, Luke was accommodating of my daughter's busy schedule. I was completely satisfied with Luke's tutoring.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
