Bio

I have been tutoring for more than 25 years, and I know how to get the most out of a student. I am one of the 100 or so people (out of nearly 300,000 each year) who scored 790 or above on the GMAT (99.95%...equivalent to 1600 SAT). I have had great success tutoring SAT, ACT, GMAT, and most other standardized tests, both independently and for test prep companies.

I have been tutoring for more than 25 years, and I know how to get the most out of a student. I have had great success tutoring SAT, ACT, GMAT, and most other standardized tests, both independently and for test prep companies.

*For SAT, the average improvement was about 250 points on the old SAT, and so far has been about 150 points on the current version. My most recent SAT student went from mid-1300s to a 1550 (1570 superscore)! I have a current student who started in the mid-1100s and is on track to score 1500+ in May.

*For GMAT, the average score increase has been 80-100 points, usually over a very intensive 1 1/2 - 3 months.

In addition to SAT/ACT/GMAT, I also work with students from 3rd grade through college. I tutor most math subjects (from elementary through college calculus) and physics (through college level 1 and 2). I have had students at most of the top schools in and around NYC, including NYU, Columbia, Cornell, Trinity, Horace Mann, Dalton, Collegiate, Chapin, Brearly, Fieldston, Riverdale, Hotchkiss, Dwight-Englewood, Marymount, Loyola, Leman, Fordham, Dominican, Poly Prep, Hunter College Elementary/HS, Brooklyn Tech, and Success Academy Schools, among others.

Background: I have a BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT and an MBA with Distinction from the University of Michigan. Over the last 20 years, I have worked in Management Consulting and Investment Banking, but tutoring/education is now my primary focus.

I am the Founder and Chief Instructor at the Harlem Math Institute, where I runs a Summer Math and Engineering Camp for kids. I am a graduate of MIT and have been teaching and tutoring in a variety of capacities for more than 25 years. I first began tutoring in the 8th grade as a way to help other students while sharing my love of math. That interest in math drew me into competition, where in high school I took 5th place in the State of Georgia in the American Mathematics Contest (AMC12), earning me a place on the State’s math team, where I helped lead the team to its first top 10 finish in the country. Upon graduation from high school, I co-founded a summer math school—the Math Instructional Institute of Atlanta—where I taught over 200 students over the next 3 years. More than 20 years later, I continues to share my love of learning in general, and have tutored and taught hundreds of students everything from basic math, science, and reading–to standardized tests for college and graduate school–to leadership development, public speaking, and how to get a job on Wall Street. I have tutored through various volunteer organizations in the city (New York City School Volunteer Program, Harlem Children Zone, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity) and have also spent time teaching grades k-7 in a charter school in New Jersey.
GMAT

GMAT

My GMAT score is a 790 (99.9+%). I have been tutoring GMAT for 5 years, and I have over 25 years of experience tutoring in general. I have consistently gotten students gains of 80-120 points or more to get them into the elusive "700 Club." I also have an MBA (with honors) from the University of Michigan and a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and have worked at top firms in both Management Consulting and Finance in my career.
GRE

GRE

My GMAT score is a 790 (99.95%). I have been tutoring GMAT and GRE for 5 years, and I have over 25 years of experience tutoring in general, particularly on the Math side. I also have an MBA (with honors) from the University of Michigan and a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and have worked at top firms in both Management Consulting and Finance in my career.
ISEE

ISEE

As a tutor who specializes in test prep, I have worked to help numerous students improve their performance on the ISEE (mostly Upper and Lower Level), the SSAT, and the SHSAT, as well as the TACHS and HSPT. I have done everything from a 3-week, 45-hour intensive prep through my Summer Math & Engineering Camp to once-a-week, year-long prep beginning September/October of the year prior to taking the test. All of my students have improved substantially, and long-term students have gotten mostly 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s on the ISEE. As of Fall'19, I am currently working with students on the ISEE, SHSAT, TACHS, and HSPT.
Martial Arts

Martial Arts

I am currently a black belt in taekwondo. I have been involved in martial arts since I was 4 years old. I begain in Issun Ryu and switched to American Karate, studying consistently from age 4 until 18. In high school I stopped testing for belts, but trained for nearly 3 years with 3 national champion fighters (one of whom went on to be a world champion). I studied various styles (karate, taekwondo, shorinji kenpo, aikido) on and off from age 18 until about 29, when I picked up taekwondo seriously and began competing. I competed in local, national and international tournaments for 4 years, during which time I became Michigan state champion at Middleweight. I continue to train on my own, teach my kids, and spar recreationally.
Physics

Physics

When I was growing up, I took physics several times: at two different summer programs for gifted kids (one at Duke, one at MIT), the regular class in my high school, the AP class in my high school, and the advanced theoretical classes once I entered MIT. In each case, I was at the top of my class, and I also helped teach physics at the same MIT summer program that I had attended when I was in high school. I have tutored college physics as well. I say all that to say that I've seen physics taught in a variety of settings to students of extremely different aptitudes, and I understand some of the difficulties that students of different levels encounter when learning physics for the first time. Physics is conquerable, and can even be a lot of fun if approached the right way.

Prior students have gone on to colleges including MIT, Harvard, Brown, Columbia, and NYU. I also have an MBA (with honors) from the University of Michigan and a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and have worked at top firms in both Management Consulting and on Wall Street in my career.
