In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a master's degree in school counseling from Hunter College. When I was doing my internship for my degree, I worked at Upward Bound, which is an educational support program for high school students held on Saturdays at New York University. During that time, I taught a semester-long course for juniors and seniors called "College Readiness" which dealt with various topics and issues related to college, including how to study for the PSAT and SAT, how to research various colleges and universities, how to complete a college application, how to write an essay for a college application, how to apply for financial aid, etc.
