About Karen

Bio

I have been a teacher and student of music and art for several years. I have taught in the classroom and on a one on one basis. My students have included children, adults and current teachers who wish to include the arts in their curriculum.

Currently, I am looking to broaden my experiences as a teacher by working with more one on one situations. I am hoping that this position will allow me to extend my experiences as a tutor as I continue my work as a classroom instructor.

I am a music/art teacher and tutor who is happiest when working with students and helping them to achieve their goals. I work with children and adults to be the best that they can be. I can work from the comfort of your home or in the studio. Time and patience are a key factor in learning I have both.

As someone who is continuing to study, I can identify with students and not just a tutor.

Thank you,
Karen H.

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I have been teaching music for many years and include music composition in my advanced classes. Upper grade students in my classes learn to compose their own songs after their have mastered the theory lessons. We begin with a short phrase (2 or 3 measures) choosing: a key, subject matter, style and rhythm. These songs are sometimes performed at a performance at the school.
General Music

General Music

I have taught classes in general music for many years. I usually begin with a song. Lessons begin with the composer of the song (and lyrics), basic structure (ABA etc.), style (classical, rock etc.). Reading notes and rests, discussing tempo and expression markings. The song is sung and perhaps a variation is discussed which is decided by the students.
Music History

Music History

I believe that the study of music history is important as a means of relating to the general history of culture. Beginning with the more contemporary, I sometimes move back to relate how what happens now has connections to the past. I discuss modern music and compare/contrast historical features to the beginnings of the topic. I teach lessons through composers and their compositions, important world or national events that occurred during that time and the impact on our cultural history.
Piano

Piano

Being a music teacher, I use the piano a great deal. This is my primary instrument. I have been playing for many years for choirs, and teach privately. I have attended three colleges / universities which required that I have advanced knowledge of keyboard studies and I continue to study privately. I have studied a wide range of piano music such as sonatas by Beethoven, Mozart and Kabelevsky as well as Gershwin, R. Kelly and Ellington. I begin my lessons with knowledge of the keyboard, reading notes and hand/finger placement(technique). I encourage students to perform for family and friends.
