My name is Barbara and I may be the ideal tutor for you!

I am happy to be a member of Wyzant. I've been teaching ESL for 13 years in New York City, tutoring adults on a one-to-one basis. I obtained my CELTA Certification (Cambridge Certificate of English Language to Adults), the Gold Standard of accreditation in 2012.

My name is Barbara and I may be the ideal tutor for you!

I am happy to be a member of Wyzant. I've been teaching ESL for 13 years in New York City, tutoring adults on a one-to-one basis. I obtained my CELTA Certification (Cambridge Certificate of English Language to Adults), the Gold Standard of accreditation in 2012.

I have also been a teacher for the past 40 years in the tap dance world, traveling to 20 countries. I have coached many of my dance students in ESL over these years, because I've always enjoyed languages and of course, teaching.

I'm available to tutor students in grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary and pronunciation. My specialty is pronunciation. Having a musical background, I have a keen ear and a unique talent for drilling sounds, words and phrases. I believe in a student centered style of teaching, where you, the student, is actively involved in the learning process. It is a proven method to successfully achieve your goals.

My lessons are engaging, fun and of course productive. I am enthusiastic, encouraging and always sensitive to the needs of my students.

Having a musical background as a tap dancer, I have an ability to identify specific sounds that a student has trouble with. Once identified, I can show the student how to form the sound correctly, focusing on the placement of the lips, tongue and jaw. Exaggerating this movement helps a student remember the placement. I also work with intonation, stress syllables and linking words together for more fluent speech.
