A successful test-taker is a prepared test-taker. As both a university instructor and a test prep tutor, I am devoted to helping students master the daunting process of standardized testing. I teach the very best strategies, tips and shortcuts for the SAT, GRE and GMAT. I want each of my students to have the clearest advantage on test day.
For each section of the test, I teach only proven methods for raising a score. For example, by organizing comprehensive word lists into dynamic visual relationships, like a visual thesaurus, SAT students are able to increase their vocabulary dramatically and efficiently.
Teaching math for any standardized test can easily become bogged down by a mass of tricks students find difficult to remember on test day. So I don't do that! Instead, I keep it clean and efficient, focusing on the fundamentals of problem solving.
For reading comprehension questions, I teach an evidenced-based method of passage analysis that quickly yields the organization and logic of a passage as well as the function of each of its parts.
To achieve a high scoring essay (SAT and GRE), I show my students how to construct a position on the given issue by discussing it from multiple viewpoints. Supporting your position in an essay form becomes intuitive and fluid, and won’t have the artificial and tedious quality of the five paragraph template detested by graders.
Lastly, for all standardized tests, simulated practice tests are a crucial part of test preparation. Beyond their diagnostic value, mock tests are essential for mastering the psychological demands of the test. Along with interpreting results to target specific areas or question types, I work with students to develop (and stick to) an intensive practice test schedule.
I strongly believe that if you know your test inside and out, you'll have all the confidence you need on test day.

I needed to take the GMAT within 7 weeks. Matthew provided excellent guidance in helping me prepare for both the quant and verbal sections. His knowledge in the math principles and verbal strategies needed to succeed helped me quickly prepare for the test. He also provided necessary feedback to help push me to do better. I also appreciated that he was available all the time on e-mail or phone even after our meetings. Matthew truly became a source of information that I could trust. Under his watch, I was able to successfully take the GMAT and get a score in my target range on the first try. I strongly recommend Matthew as a GMAT tutor to anyone in the metroplex who wants someone who is willing, knowledgeable, and flexible on time/location.
I've met with quite a few tutors in my quest for the elusive 700+ score on the GMAT and Matthew has been by far my favorite. He is truly invested in his students' success and not at all in the tutoring business for the money. In fact, with his level of expertise and experience, he should be charging a whole lot more! Matthew knows the GMAT inside out and gave me countless insights about the test algorithm, study methods, ways to outsmart the system, tips and tricks, time management, what to do the day of the test, and detailed feedback regarding which questions weigh more and which ones can be skipped over. His extensive knowledge about the test cannot be beat. He and I worked primarily on quant but he still also gave me valuable advise about verbal CR and SC and the essay and recommended the most effective test prep resources. I've taken the test several times and each time he was extremely supportive and expertly assuaged my fears. He always managed to lift my spirits even when when I was most anxious and kept me pushing forward (with my disposition, that's no small feat!) My score went from Q39 on the first GMAC practice test to Q49 on the official test, and that's despite the fact that I have not done any math for the past 7 years. Matthew also provided me with valuable insights about MBA programs and MBA application process. All in all, I cannot recommend him highly enough!
Let me start by saying that I have incredible test and studying anxiety of which I attribute to my poor study habits in college. So needless to say, preparing for the GMAT to me has been about as intimidating a task as they come.
Since my first phone call and subsequent meeting with Matthew, my anxieties began to dissolve as Matthew's power over the test material, his enthusiasm for teaching, and his ability to collaborate on a path to success came into view, immediately.
Prior to our meeting, I had just finished a Manhattan class course and yet still felt completely lost as to how I was going to achieve a 700+ score. Matthew's teaching style is one that miraculously combines practicality in applying the material in and outside the test with an incredible patience that creates space for real learning. The importance of this to me can't be overstated as it's translated not only to a newfound complete confidence in my ability to achieve my target GMAT score (of which I'm not far off at all right not btw - mere 10's of points) but also to a self-confidence in myself in being able to attack and learn new material under a deadline (HELLO BSCHOOL NICE TO MEET YOU!).
Again, Matthew's been at the center of that change, and I can't recommend him enough to GMAT test takers shooting for a 700+ score.
Matt and I have only had one lesson but he has already shown the following which I highly value in a tutor:
- Knowledge and command of the subject matter
- Personal commitment to helping the student succeed
Very thorough and patient - best tutor I've ever had. Helped me the with GMAT when I knew nothing. Highly recommend him.
Really great and to the point! He helped me prepare for my interview in a really short period of time (lots of probability and combinatorics problems) and I got the job!
He helped me with some last minute GMAT prep and I got better than the score I was looking for. I would definitely recommend him.
We love Matthew, my son is doing very well working one on one with him for SAT math tutoring.
He is very easy going and easy to understand. We will continue the tutoring until my son takes
the SAT test on Nov. 2nd.
Matt is an exceptional tutor. He's a master at the GMAT and other standardized tests, but more importantly, a master communicator. He listens very well, is able to size up his students and pin point where they are having set backs and is a great teacher. Hands down, one of the best tutors I've used. I paid over $100 per hour to other high speed GMAT prep companies and honestly--they didn't weren't as quality as Matt. Use Matt. You won't regret it.
I cannot say enough good things about Matthew. Whether you are starting fresh or have reached a plateau in your preparations, Matthew can help you reach your goals. His professionalism and deep knowledge mixed with a genuinely deep concern for the performance of his students truly sets Matthew apart from all other tutors. I reached out to Matthew while I was studying for the GMAT. I had been studying for 4 months and had hit a plateau with all my practice GMAT scores coming back within 10 points of each other. At that point I was still 40 points shy of my goal. I decided to work with Matthew because of the excellent reviews he had received from past clients. While Matthew is extremely qualified to work with students on verbal or quantitative skills, I enlisted his services for Quant help as I was sufficiently strong in Verbal. Anybody can break down where you are struggling but Matthew can determine why. Matthew developed a game plan which he had me stick to that emphasized quality fundamentals within even the most difficult problems. In addition, he showed me new ways to solve problems that had been giving me issues throughout my preparation. I worked with Matthew twice a week for two hours a session over a month. I was three weeks away from my test when we finished. Over those three weeks Matthew continued to be an intrepid guide taking concerned phone calls and responding to my questions within hours no matter the time of day. The single incident that stands out most in my mind from working with Matthew was when I was a week away from my test and hadn't seen any movement in my Verbal score. Our work together had raised my Quant score significantly, but, as I hadn't worked with him on Verbal, my Verbal score had remained flat even though I thought I was improving. After a practice CAT a week before the test when I was panicked due to the lack of movement in Verbal, I reached out to Matthew for help. I showed him the questions I was missing and within 3 hours he had analyzed what I was doing, narrowed it down to a single concept I was consistently getting wrong, discussed it on the phone with me, and developed a customized lesson plan that I could access on-line with which to practice and improve (he is great with technology). I significantly beat my GMAT goal by scoring a 760 which is in the top 1% of all scores. I could not have done that without Matthew. If you are truly committed to your success, then work with Matthew. I stand by the comment that he is as committed to your success as you are. If you are willing to work to be the best and want to work with the best, then give Matthew a call.
Matthew is absolutely amazing at breaking down GRE questions into more manageable terms in order to really approach them strategically. His method is true and tried and helps students overcome any anxieties. Furthermore, he is very patient and flexible during the process. Would definitely recommend!
Matthew worked with my daughter for 5 or 6 weeks before she took the SAT. I wanted someone not only intelligent but also attuned to the approaches that work with this particular test. While I didn't directly observe the lessons, I was impressed with the summaries that Matthew sent, as well as with the homework he left for her to do. My daughter, while reluctant to have me hire a tutor, immediately realized that Matthew was very helpful to her. She spent time reviewing and preparing for the sessions and felt good about her preparation for the test. I haven't seen her results yet, but whatever they are, I appreciate the thoughtful preparation that Matthew provided. I highly recommend him!
Matthew is a great tutor - he has been working on SAT prep with my son and his friend this fall and they seem to get a lot out of the sessions. Matthew gives plenty of homework, breaks down problems for his students in a logical way, and seems to take pride in the accomplishments of the students. My son actually enjoys his sessions with Matthew - he has gained confidence and of course academic knowledge.
I worked with Matthew for almost six weeks, 2 to 3 times a week, to prepare for the GMAT. I had been out of school for almost three years and hadn't taken any math in even longer. The first time I took the GMAT I got a pretty dismal score in the quantitative portion and I was not feeling particularly confident in my ability to get the score I needed in the short amount of time I had before taking the test again. I didn't test well on the SAT, back in the day, and I've never been a fan of math in general. But Matthew is endlessly patient and always positive in a very genuine way. I was extremely impressed with his ability to always be "on the job" every single session and he's completely brilliant but very approachable at the same time. In my opinion, one of his greatest strengths is the fact that he teaches students at all ages and levels. I was always astounded that he could go from one lesson to the next, changing subjects, levels of difficulty and people, and never miss a beat. I got the math score I needed on the GMAT, and with a few quick discussions from Matthew, also raised my verbal score considerably, giving me an overall score that was higher then I needed. I would recommend him to anyone, especially those seeking test prep tutoring.
After working with Matthew on the reading section of the SAT (about five hours), our daughter's score of 690 flew up to 750! ****Matthew really knows the test and how to get around the snares and pitfalls.**** Extremely intelligent guy! As a tutor, he is friendly, prompt, professional, patient, and encouraging. He is also flexible in working with scheduling. We had originally tried one of the "store-front" test-prep places, and wish we had just worked with Matthew. In our daughter's case, her scores were already good, but the regular test-prep was designed for students who needed basics, and they didn't teach enough of the tips/strategy needed. We recommend Matthew no matter what level your student achieves as a beginning point. Thank you SO much, Matthew!!!!!!!
My very first lesson with Matthew I saw the value of his tutoring. His abundant knowledge and excellent teaching strategies for the GRE saved me. I only had 3 weeks to prepare and Matthew knew exactly what to work on in that short time to get me ready. I improved my performance on the test immensely and made the exact score I needed to make. I looked at other tutors but I thoroughly recommend Matthew as the best.
I met with Matthew a lot in preparation for the GRE, and he definitely helped me brush up on my math skills, verbal strategies, and writing technique. He was very patient, especially on my off days, when I wasn't in the mood for GRE. I improved my GRE score into the range I was hoping for. He's great about figuring out the best way that you learn and working with you in that way. He's also very encouraging and confident in you. If God forbid, I have to take any other test I would refer back to Matthew. He also is easy to make your schedule with and any changes that need to be changed he's very responsive and quick!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
