John is a Mathematics, Physics, SAT, ACT Specialist with a B.A. in English from Dartmouth College. John has helped hundreds of students dramatically increase their scores in their courses, as well as on the ACT and SAT in his years of work as a private tutor. He loves to find ways to have his students learn their content as efficiently as possible, such as creating overnight study guides for students and teaching himself how to write upside down in order to teach better during sessions. He currently teaches as a Mathematics and Physics instructor at the School for Young Performers based in Manhattan. He also has five years of experience providing private tutoring to students in preparation for mathematics (pre-algebra through calculus), physics, English, ESL, and test prep (ACT, SAT, ISEE, TACHS). He has tutored home-schooled students, private school students (including Trinity, Avenues, Xavier Prep, Horace Mann, Avenues, etc.), and public school students in New York City, New Jersey, and Westchester County.

John has also taught courses at several summer programs over the past few years, including with the non-profit education organization NJ SEEDS during its summer sessions at Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY, as well as at the Summer Institute for the Gifted at their programs based on the Princeton University and Yale University campuses. He is currently enrolled at Columbia University's School of Professional Studies, completing coursework in Mathematics and Physics. He graduated Cum Laude from Avon Old Farms School in Avon, CT for high school. John also enjoys to rock climb, play soccer, and hike during his free time when he is not tutoring.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

During high school for approximately 2 years, I had been tutoring as a volunteer for grades 1-5 in math, science and English in a Hartford, Connecticut public elementary school. After graduation, I had been working as a private tutor for elementary (K-6th) students in the Northern NJ area. I currently tutor one student in elementary school for general reading, math and science. Previously, I have tutored 3 elementary school students in everything from general science to reading comprehension to Spanish review. I also currently volunteer with a non-profit organization called Paterson Education Fund, which helps support elementary as well as high school students in the city of Paterson, N.J.. I am also studying to prepare for my teacher's certification program next year.

For approximately 2 years, I tutored as a volunteer for grades 1-5 in math, science and English in a Hartford, Connecticut public elementary school. It included ESL work with many non-native English speaking students, mostly Spanish speakers, who were enrolled in class and had difficulty. For 6 months, I tutored three students with ESL work (two Spanish speakers, one Mandarin Chinese speaker) at a New Hampshire high school. I had received a job offer last summer to work as an ESL teacher at a public school in Seoul, South Korea through a private teaching English abroad company called Ivy in Asia. However, I turned down the offer due to personal/family reasons. I currently participate in language exchange sessions at local public libraries in the North NJ area. I currently work with a Chinese Mandarin student in mainly pronunciation, and will soon be helping a Korean-speaking student with grammar and pronunciation.

I have tutored several homeschooled students over my past 4+ years of tutoring. These have included students enrolled in traditional homeschool programs, high school athletes requiring homeschool programs to accommodate their hectic traveling schedule (mainly for travelling hockey teams), as well as students whom required temporary homeschool work while recovering from surgery, etc. I have tutored middle and high school homeschool students primarily, with a focus on STEM subjects including math, biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as writing English papers.

Linear Algebra

I audited a Linear Algebra course during my undergraduate career. In addition, I have have tutored several students in the past whom have taken Calculus with Linear Algebra included in their coursework. In addition, I am currently enrolled online in a MOOC course for Linear Algebra as well as Quantum Mechanics to continue my practice in this subject.

I have tutored three separate students in Regents exams over the past few years, including a student whom had been tutored in Geometry, Global History and Physics simultaneously. Most recently, I have set my Regents focus on math and have primarily covered the Algebra and Geometry regents with recent students.

Study Skills

During the past few years, I have been helping students find different sets of study skills to help them complete homework assignments and study for tests in all their subjects. I have done this working as a private tutor for students who sometimes needed help with three to five subjects in an hour. I taught them memorization skills, mnemonics and other techniques, as well as providing them online resources and books which would help them continue their progress. In addition, I currently work with a non-profit education organization helping low-income high school students with their homework and SAT review. I have been primarily focusing on general study skills and resources for many of these students, whether they are having any constraints due to time, budget, study area or otherwise.

After just a few sessions, my daughter's grades in Geometry have improved tremendously (she got a 100% on her last quiz). John is adept at assisting his students in grasping concepts which have otherwise eluded them. If that weren't enough, John takes the extra time in the evenings to create study sheets for my daughter to assist in her review for upcoming tests. Really a fantastic person and a
