Hi! I’m Kathryn, a student at New York University studying English and History. I specialize in English, essay writing, AP English Language, and AP U.S. History, and I enjoy helping students become more confident readers and writers.
I earned 5s on AP English Language, AP English Literature, AP U.S. History, and AP Research. Having recently taken these courses myself, I’m familiar with the AP curriculum and exam format. For AP Lang, I can help with rhetorical analysis, argument and synthesis essays, evidence selection, and timed writing. For APUSH, I can help with content review, historical analysis, DBQs, LEQs, SAQs, and study strategies.
I have experience as a private English tutor, working one-on-one with a high school student on reading comprehension, vocabulary, textual analysis, and essay writing. I have adapted lessons for a student with ADHD by breaking challenging readings and assignments into manageable steps and finding approaches that fit the individual student. I have also mentored younger students through Speech & Debate, helping them strengthen their writing, argumentation, organization, and public-speaking skills.
Writing is a major part of my academic background. I completed AP Seminar and AP Research, including a year-long independent research project culminating in a 5,000-word academic paper. I have also been published as a student journalist through the Los Angeles Times High School Insider, writing about social and public-policy issues.
At NYU, I was selected as one of 60 incoming students for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars Program, a selective scholarship and leadership program recognizing academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to social justice.
My tutoring style is patient, encouraging, and individualized. Rather than simply giving students answers, I explain why something works and help them develop strategies they can use independently. My goal is to make difficult material manageable while helping students become stronger, more confident learners.
