My name is Yan, and I am currently pursuing a degree in Mathematics Education at CUNY Brooklyn College. My academic journey has given me a strong foundation in both mathematics and teaching pedagogy, including classroom management, student psychology, and differentiated instruction. I have studied how students learn at different developmental stages, which allows me to adapt my teaching methods to meet each student where they are.

I have over four years of tutoring and teaching experience across a variety of settings. Through the CUNY Reading Rescue program, I provided one-on-one reading tutoring to elementary school students, helping them build foundational literacy skills. As a Teacher Fellow with NYC MEN TEACH, I worked in a summer school classroom teaching Geometry 1 and 2 to high school students, where I supported both whole-class instruction and individual student needs. I also served as a student teacher at CUNY Brooklyn College, where I collaborated with lead teachers to assess student progress and adjust lessons accordingly. These experiences have taught me how to break down complex concepts into simple, understandable steps and how to keep students engaged and motivated.

Beyond traditional teaching, I have worked as a Behavior Technician with children on the autism spectrum, where I applied behavioral techniques to improve communication and social skills. This role gave me exceptional patience, flexibility, and the ability to build trust with students who learn differently. I believe every student has the potential to succeed, and my goal is to create a supportive, encouraging learning environment where students feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Whether your child needs help with math, reading, or building study skills, I am committed to helping them gain confidence and achieve their academic goals.

Geometry

Geometry

I've taught geometry in a summer school setting, so I know exactly where students tend to struggle—proofs, triangle congruence, circles, and volume formulas are usually the big ones. My approach is hands-on and visual; I like drawing things out and walking through problems step by step until the logic clicks. Having worked with students who were retaking the class over the summer, I'm used to helping people catch up quickly without making them feel rushed or overwhelmed. I focus on building both understanding and confidence, so my students leave each session feeling like they actually own the material.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I've worked with linear algebra students at both the high school and college level, helping them get comfortable with matrices, determinants, vector spaces, and eigenvalues. I focus on breaking down abstract concepts into concrete, visual examples so they actually make sense rather than just memorizing steps. My goal is to meet students where they're at, figure out what's tripping them up, and work through problems together until everything clicks. I've seen students go from feeling completely lost to confidently tackling their exams after just a few sessions.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have a strong command of prealgebra concepts, including integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and basic algebraic equations, and I enjoy making these topics accessible and engaging for students. My approach involves identifying foundational gaps and using clear, step-by-step explanations to build student confidence and mastery. I am dedicated to creating a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing strong problem-solving skills for future math success.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I've tutored precalculus extensively, so I'm very familiar with the usual stumbling blocks—polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic equations, and trig identities are all in my wheelhouse. My style is to break down complicated problems into smaller, manageable pieces so students don't get lost in the shuffle. I make a point of connecting precalculus topics back to real examples and future calculus concepts, so it doesn't feel like random formulas to memorize. Whether you're preparing for a test or trying to stay ahead, I'll work with you at your own pace and make sure you actually understand what's going on.
Probability

Probability

I've worked with probability students at both high school and college levels, covering everything from basic counting principles to conditional probability and distributions. I focus on helping students recognize which rules apply to which problems—because that's usually where people get stuck. I use plenty of examples and real-world scenarios so the concepts stick, not just the formulas. My students tell me I make probability feel way less intimidating than they expected.
