My approach to tutoring focuses on strengthening students’ understanding of fundamental concepts so they can confidently tackle more advanced material. Rather than relying on memorizing a series of steps, I help students understand the “why” behind the process. My approach to tutoring focuses on strengthening students’ understanding of fundamental concepts so they can confidently tackle more advanced material. Rather than relying on memorizing a series of steps, I help students understand the “why” behind the process. Whenever possible, I teach students how to derive formulas from first principles instead of simply memorizing them. I am also a big believer in using visual tools as much as possible to bolster my teaching, because I have found that students learn best when they can “see” the problem.
This style takes many forms depending on the subject matter. A few examples include in Geometry, breaking down proofs into easy-to-understand steps, and helping students learn the process rather than simply memorizing postulates with difficult names. In Precalculus/Trigonometry, I help students gain a strong understanding of the Unit Circle so that they understand what “sine”, “cosine”, and “tangent” really are and where they come from. For students taking Calculus, finding the volume of a shape rotated about an axis becomes much easier when they can see what that actually looks like.
I have worked with students of all ages, including adult learners pursuing advanced degrees. I excel at working with students who have IEPs or require individualized instruction to perform at their best. Over the past 16+ years, I have worked with more than 600 students of all ability levels and specialize in tutoring every math subject from Pre-Algebra through AP Calculus.
I earned perfect scores on both the SAT and ACT math sections in high school, and have a ton of helpful tips and tricks to help students master standardized tests. I earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from UConn and previously worked as a Weapons Systems Engineer at General Dynamics Electric Boat. I currently reside in New York City.
