I have been teaching and tutoring since 1996 and currently teach 10th and 11th grade English and AP U.S. History and Government at Bay Ridge Preparatory School in Brooklyn. Over the course of my career, I have worked with middle school, high school, college, and adult students in English, history, writing, literature, government and politics, and philosophy. I have also taught SAT verbal, reading, and writing and ACT English, reading, and writing. At the college level, I have taught at Clemson University and the Gallatin School at NYU. I earned a B.A. in English Literature from Columbia College, Columbia University, and an M.F.A. in Theatre from Louisiana State University.

As a teacher and tutor, my focus is not just on grades and correct answers, but on helping students become stronger readers, writers, and thinkers. Rather than relying on memorization, I help students develop the reading, writing, and analytical skills that allow them to become more independent learners. I enjoy working with intellectually curious students, but I also have extensive experience helping those who lack confidence or have struggled academically. Regardless of the lesson, my goal is not only to improve grades and test scores but also to help students become more thoughtful, confident learners.

One of my goals as a teacher is to convey my enthusiasm for the humanities to my students. My own scholarly and creative interests include Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, classical tragedy, political theory, and philosophy.

I studied Attic Greek with a tutor from the CUNY Latin & Greek Institute for two months and for eight years on my own (I stopped studying it when I became a full-time high school teacher). I have read all 32 extant Greek tragedies and the one extant Greek satyr play, and I have directed Richmond Lattiomore’s translation of Agamemnon, my own translation of Agamemnon, The Burial at Thebes (Seamus Heney’s adaptation of Antigone), and Seneca’s Trojan Women (a Roman version of the Greek tragedy).

United States History

United States History

I have taught AP U.S. History for the past four years. Before that, I taught New York State Regents U.S. History, and I have many years of experience tutoring middle and high school students in American history and preparing students for standardized history exams. I have particular expertise in 20th-century American political and social history, especially the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson, the Great Society, and the Civil Rights Movement. I wrote a play about LBJ that was professionally produced in 2013, and I have published articles on American politics in Dissent and First of the Month. I also grew up immersed in American politics and history: my father was the political writer Michael Harrington, whose 1962 book The Other America helped draw national attention to poverty and influenced the development of the War on Poverty. My academic background is in the humanities. I earned a B.A. in English Literature from Columbia College, Columbia University, and an M.F.A. in Theatre from Louisiana State University. My years of teaching U.S. history, combined with my lifelong engagement with American political history, have given me the subject knowledge necessary to tutor students in U.S. history at the middle school, high school, and AP levels.
