Hi! I'm Joelle, an experienced tutor who works with middle and high school students in both academic subjects and standardized test prep. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Cognitive Science from Occidental College and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Columbia University. My academic background and years of tutoring experience have equipped me to help students build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to achieve their goals.

Over the years, I have worked with students both in person and online, providing individualized instruction tailored to each student's strengths and needs. In standardized test prep, including the SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, and other admissions exams, I have helped many students improve from below the 50th percentile to the 80th and 90th percentiles through targeted skill development, effective test-taking strategies, and consistent practice. Academically, I have helped students raise grades from Bs and Cs to As by strengthening foundational concepts, improving study habits, and developing greater confidence in the classroom.

My teaching philosophy is simple: students learn best when they feel supported, challenged, and engaged. I strive to create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and taking ownership of their learning. Every lesson is personalized to meet each student's goals, learning style, and pace.

I offer support in a variety of academic subjects as well as standardized test preparation. Whether your student is looking to improve grades, prepare for an upcoming exam, strengthen study skills, or build confidence in a challenging subject, I am committed to helping them succeed.

I look forward to working with your student and helping them reach their full potential!

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have experience tutoring ACT English with a focus on the grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, rhetoric, and reading skills tested on the exam. I work with students to master the rules of Standard English conventions while also developing strategies for approaching passage-based questions efficiently and accurately under timed conditions. My tutoring emphasizes recognizing common ACT question patterns, eliminating incorrect answer choices, and improving pacing so students can maximize their scores. I tailor lessons to each student's strengths and areas for improvement, whether they need a comprehensive review of grammar concepts or are aiming to increase an already strong score into the 30s. In addition to ACT English, I tutor SAT Reading & Writing, PSAT, ISEE, SSAT, and GRE Verbal, giving me extensive experience teaching grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and standardized test strategies. My goal is to help students build both the content knowledge and confidence needed to perform at their highest level on test day.
ACT Math

ACT Math

I have extensive experience helping high school students prepare for the ACT Math section through individualized instruction focused on algebra, geometry, functions, data analysis, and advanced problem-solving strategies. My students have achieved substantial score improvements through targeted practice, content review, and effective time-management techniques designed specifically for the ACT. Drawing on my background in Cognitive Science from Occidental College and my Master of Public Health from Columbia University, I help students develop strong quantitative reasoning skills and learn how to approach challenging problems efficiently under timed testing conditions. I tailor each lesson to the student's current skill level and goals, helping them build confidence, strengthen foundational math concepts, and maximize their ACT Math performance.
Epidemiology

Epidemiology

I earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Columbia University, where I received extensive training in epidemiology, biostatistics, study design, causal inference, and public health research methods. Through my graduate coursework and research experience, I developed expertise in analyzing population health data, evaluating risk factors for disease, and understanding the social and structural determinants of health. I currently work in health research, applying epidemiologic principles to longitudinal studies examining health behaviors, stress, aging, and health disparities. My teaching approach focuses on helping students build a strong conceptual understanding of epidemiologic methods while developing the analytical and critical thinking skills needed for academic and professional success in public health.
High School Placement Test

High School Placement Test

I have experience tutoring students preparing for the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and other competitive entrance exams, including the ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, SAT, and ACT. Through this work, I have developed a strong understanding of the HSPT's verbal, quantitative, mathematics, reading, and language sections, as well as the strategies needed to perform well under timed conditions. My academic background, combined with extensive experience in standardized test preparation, allows me to tailor instruction to each student's strengths and areas for growth. I focus on strengthening core academic skills, teaching effective test-taking strategies, and building confidence so students are well prepared to achieve their goals on test day.
ISEE

ISEE

I have experience helping students prepare for the ISEE through individualized instruction focused on test content, strategy, and confidence-building. I work with students on verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics achievement, quantitative reasoning, and essay preparation, tailoring lessons to each student's strengths and areas for growth. My background includes extensive work in standardized test prep, helping students develop effective pacing strategies, critical thinking skills, and strong test-taking habits. I strive to create a supportive learning environment that helps students feel prepared and confident throughout the admissions process.
Latin

Latin

I studied Latin throughout high school and minored in Classics in college, where I completed advanced coursework in the Latin language, grammar, translation, and ancient literature. This background gives me a strong understanding of Latin syntax, morphology, vocabulary, and the grammatical concepts that students often find challenging. I enjoy helping students build confidence by breaking down complex topics into manageable steps and emphasizing pattern recognition rather than memorization alone. Whether a student is learning noun declensions, verb conjugations, cases, sentence translation, or even longer translations, I tailor each lesson to their individual needs and pace. I am also happy to work with a student's school curriculum or textbook to ensure our sessions directly support classroom success.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have extensive experience helping high school students prepare for the SAT. My approach to SAT Math focuses on strengthening core mathematical concepts, identifying recurring question types, and developing effective test-taking strategies that improve both accuracy and pacing. I work with students on all major SAT Math topics, including algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry. In addition to content review, I teach students how to interpret complex word problems, recognize common test patterns, eliminate incorrect answer choices efficiently, and manage time effectively during the exam. As a tutor, I tailor instruction to each student's strengths and areas for growth. Whether a student needs to build foundational math skills or is aiming for a top score, I create individualized lesson plans that target their specific goals. I have helped students significantly improve their standardized test performance through focused practice, strategic instruction, and confidence-building support.
SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

I help students prepare for the SHSAT through targeted instruction in both English Language Arts and mathematics, with an emphasis on mastering the unique format and pacing of the exam. My approach combines content review, strategic test-taking skills, and extensive practice with SHSAT-style questions to help students build confidence and improve performance. I have experience working with middle school students and tailoring lessons to each student's individual strengths, challenges, and admissions goals. My goal is to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to perform at their best on this highly competitive exam.
SSAT

SSAT

I have extensive experience preparing middle school students for the SSAT through individualized instruction focused on verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative skills, writing, and test-taking strategies. My students have achieved significant score gains, with many improving from below the 50th percentile to the 80th and 90th percentiles. I also have firsthand experience with the SSAT, having successfully taken the exam as part of my admission to The Lawrenceville School, one of the nation's leading independent college preparatory schools. Drawing on my background in Cognitive Science from Occidental College and my Master of Public Health from Columbia University, I help students develop effective problem-solving techniques, critical thinking skills, and confidence under timed testing conditions while tailoring each lesson to their individual strengths and goals.
