Laurel is a junior and Rawlings Presidential Research Scholar at Cornell University, where she studies Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biomaterials and Drug Delivery. Laurel is a junior and Rawlings Presidential Research Scholar at Cornell University, where she studies Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Biomaterials and Drug Delivery. She is also an honors graduate of nationally-ranked Lake Forest High School and a National Merit Scholar. At Cornell, Laurel serves as a Peer Advisor in the College of Engineering, mentoring a cohort of 20 first-year students through their transition to college-level coursework. Outside the classroom, she conducts hydrogel biomaterials research in a Cornell bioengineering lab, has spent two summers as a research fellow at the Harvard Wyss Institute, and holds an EMT license as a pre-medical student.
With more than six years of formal teaching experience, Laurel specializes in math and high school sciences. She began as a Senior Instructor at Mathnasium, working with students from elementary through high school in both small-group and one-on-one settings, developing individualized learning plans and adapting her approach to a wide range of learning styles. She has since built an extensive private tutoring practice, working with students in person and online across all levels of math, from middle-school algebra through differential calculus, as well as high school chemistry, biology, and physics. Her approach emphasizes building genuine conceptual understanding rather than memorization, breaking complex problems into manageable steps, and meeting each student at their current level before pushing them forward.
Laurel also has a strong track record with standardized tests and advanced coursework. She completed twelve AP classes and earned a 5 on every exam, and tutors extensively for the SAT, ACT, and AP exams, including AP Chemistry, Biology, Calculus BC, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Literature, and Language. At the college level, she works with students in General and Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics I & II with Calculus, Cellular Biology, Genetics, Biomaterials, and upper-level Biomedical Engineering courses.
