Ciao! I’m Steven, and I teach Italian language and culture at the University of Notre Dame. I’ve spent the past five years working with students in college classrooms and one-on-one, and what I love most is helping people feel comfortable actually using Italian in real life—not just memorizing it.
My connection to Italian is also very personal—I began learning the language as an opera singer working at Metropolitan Opera, where Italian was part of my daily life. That experience shaped how I approach teaching: I focus a lot on sound, rhythm, and expression, so the language feels natural and alive, not just something on a page.
My academic background is in Italian culture, literature, and history, so I bring that into lessons in an accessible way. But just as important, I know what it’s like to learn languages myself, and how intimidating it can feel at first. I aim to create a relaxed, supportive space where you can make mistakes, ask questions, and build confidence step by step.
Every student is different, so I take the time to understand your goals—whether you’re preparing for a class, planning a trip, or learning for personal enrichment. I combine practical conversation with clear grammar explanations, and I often include music, film, and everyday Italian culture to keep things engaging.
If you’re looking for someone patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in your progress, I’d be really happy to work with you!
