Hello! My name is Sylvia, and I'm a 25-year-old PhD student in New York City researching cancer biology. My academic journey has taken me from UC Berkeley, where I earned my undergraduate degree in Engineering, to Columbia University, where I completed my M.S. in Biomedical Engineering — and I'm now continuing that path at the doctoral level. Along the way, I've developed a deep love for the sciences and mathematics that I'm eager to share with students who are looking to build confidence in these subjects.
I have had several tutoring experiences working with elementary, middle and high school students across a range of subjects, including geometry, pre-algebra, algebra, precalculus, biology, chemistry, and physics. I've had the privilege of working with students one-on-one in both volunteer and more formal settings, and I've gained meaningful experience supporting students with a variety of learning styles and needs, including those with learning disabilities. What I've found is that every student has their own way of clicking with a concept — and part of what I love most about tutoring is finding that approach together.
My tutoring philosophy goes beyond simply working through assigned problems. I believe that true understanding comes from grasping the underlying logic and broader context of a subject, not just memorizing steps. My goal is to help students develop frameworks for thinking through challenging problems on their own, so that they leave each session feeling more capable and less intimidated — whether they're preparing for a test or just trying to keep up with a fast-moving class.
