Hi, I'm Valerie! I tutor math, science, and engineering from a middle school level up to undergraduate. I gained experience helping younger students throughout my high school and college years with these topics, as well as science fair project design (for which I was honored to receive the Craig Sander Outstanding Mentor Award in 2013). Over the past year I've returned to tutoring after working as an engineer in the tech industry and have enjoyed the opportunity to help a variety of students from middle school to adult learners. Typically I aim to support students' learning in a one-on-one setting by working through practice questions and figuring out troublesome concepts together.

I graduated from MIT in 2018 with a GPA of 5.0/5.0 and Bachelor's and Master's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, including undergraduate and thesis work on SoC and FPGA programming. I also received a minor in music, focused on composition and theory. After graduating, I worked as an engineer at NVIDIA for just shy of 7 years. I'm most familiar with Python-based data processing and machine learning libraries and have experience with C++ kernels, server/cluster scripting, and data presentation as well.

Prior to college, I received a 2390 on the SAT in 2011 (790 Reading / 800 Math / 800 Writing) and a composite score of 36 on the ACT in 2012. I scored a 5 on AP tests including Calculus BC, Biology, Chemistry, Physics C Mechanics and E&M, Computer Science A, Statistics, and Environmental Science between 2010 and 2013. During middle and high school I also attended a number of competitions including ISEF (finalist 2012-14 with a handful of awards), AMC (2010 AMC 8 perfect score, 2013 AMC 12A 112.5, 2013 AIME 9), USNCO (2012 national qualifier), and USABO (2013 semifinalist).

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or want to schedule a session-- I'd love to hear from you! Copies of my transcript, technical writing samples, and other details can be shared on request.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

I scored an 36 on the ACT Math section and have since helped a number of students prepare. I'd be happy to help you assess your current ability and get ready for the test too! Please feel free to get in contact if you have any questions, no commitment needed.
Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering

I graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 2018 (GPA 5.0). As an undergraduate and Master's student, I was involved with research using SoC and FPGA programming (including C++, Python, Verilog, and Matlab / Simulink HDL Coder). After graduation, I worked at NVIDIA as an engineer for just under 7 years, primarily on GPU performance analysis and optimization for machine learning applications (focused on Tensorflow and PyTorch).
Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering

I graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 2018 (GPA 5.0). I'm familiar with principles of analog design and power electronics but focused primarily on digital circuits, including undergraduate and Master's research involving FPGA HDL programming with Verilog and Simulink HDL Coder. (I also have some exposure to computer processors and Bluespec hardware description, courtesy mostly of an undergraduate project in which another student and I re-implemented much of the old Apollo Guidance Computer used in historical lunar missions-- happy to talk about this at length if you're curious, we had a lot of fun with it!)
Music Theory

Music Theory

Alongside my primary engineering degree, I graduated in 2018 with a minor in music, focused on theory and composition. I first learned the classical principles of common practice period composition based on counterpoint, then moved forward through music history focusing on experimental / art music. As an undergraduate, I also had the opportunity to have a few compositions performed (including a string quartet and several shorter compositions for piano, player piano, flute, and viola/percussion ensemble, scores available on request) and was honored to receive the 2017 Philip Loew Memorial Award.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I scored an 800 on the SAT Math section and have since helped a number of students prepare. I'd be happy to help you assess your current ability and get ready for the test too! Please feel free to get in contact if you have any questions, no commitment needed.
