NYU Music Business with a Love for Pop Music

I'm an NYU Music Business undergraduate student with proficiency in music theory and aural skills training up to an advanced college level. My expertise lies in how both fields interact with pop music; several songs from your favorite artists in the modern pop era utilize the same common chord progression schemata, harmonic voice leading habits, and chromatic deviation techniques.

I want to make the subject of music theory more relatable and streamlined for my students. As a tutor, I can use these pop songs and any other song my students are passionate about as my main models for teaching. Instead of drilling material without student input, I plan to release my students into a musical environment that allows them to explore the concepts for themselves, guiding them when necessary and allowing them to build their theoretical foundation.

My interest in music has always stemmed from its ability to induce natural human connection. As president of both my high school's Thespian Society and Open Mic Club, I used my 4+ years of experience with music and leadership to create safe spaces for students in both clubs, a mindset I’d like to carry into every tutoring session. I will give my students the safety to fail, and the structure to learn from it.
