Hi, I'm Marla! I graduated from the University of Chicago in 2022 with my Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology. In college, I gravitated to opportunities where I got to work with younger students, especially high schoolers. By the end of college, after pursuing several of these opportunities, including one as an Instructional Intern and another as a Volunteer Tutor, I decided to take my interest in education more seriously.
After college, I worked with the American Red Cross full-time as a Disaster Program Specialist and a large part of my role was teaching Disaster Preparedness, First Aid, and CPR classes to kids and adults of all ages. I absolutely loved the feeling of teaching and being in a classroom. I later served as a Virtual Math Tutor with SAGA Education, a non-profit funded by AmeriCorps. In this role, I tutored Algebra and Geometry to groups of 1-6 high school students across six class periods each day. After completing my service year with SAGA, I transitioned into private tutoring, and have been a private tutor since June 2024. Along the way, I have also explored other teaching opportunities, including a season as a preschool teacher and another as a snowboard instructor. These were absolutely fun and enriching experiences.
Within my time as a private tutor, I have grown to specialize in supporting students with learning differences. All of my current students have learning disabilities or other special learning needs, and I am intentional about adapting lessons, pacing, and selecting appropriate teaching strategies to meet each of my students where they are. It’s extremely important to me that students enter our virtual classroom feeling supported by positivity, patience, engagement, accessibility, structure, and a motivating, comfortable environment.”
If your student needs support in Math (specifically Algebra and Geometry), ELA (specifically Reading, Essay Writing, and Vocabulary), the Social Sciences (specifically US History and Anthropology), or related subjects, I am here to help!
