Hi, my name is Lauro C! I am an alumnus of Hunter College High School in NYC, a graduate of the University of Chicago with a Bachelors in Biology (Class of 2024), and a lifelong student with a passion for teaching others.
I have previously worked in various New York and Chicago labs as a research associate/technician studying diseases ranging from sepsis to schizophrenia. My academic specialties include (epi)genetics and microbiology, though my interests range far beyond, from music theory to Euclidean geometry. Outside of research, I am an avid athlete and lover of performance arts, having taught aerial and acrobatic classes and also performed for circus shows run by my student-led troupe at the University of Chicago. I have always been a music fanatic and was classically trained in piano and violin, then learned to play the ukulele and guitar in more recent years; I love to play and sing with family and friends.
I believe that learning has a sweet spot, where students are pushed out of comfort zones to reignite curiosity, but the joy of learning remains alongside the frustration of challenge that fosters growth. Effective and focused study does not have to mean grueling hard work. My teaching style highlights patience, persistence, and creativity rather than repeated drilling or brute force memorization, in cases where it can be avoided. While I prioritize lesson planning based on each student’s needs, I always invite creating links between newer and less familiar material and older, more comfortably known topics. This simultaneously strengthens understanding of current material and reinforces and integrates previous lessons into that growing web of understanding.
I am comfortable teaching across a wide age range and am experienced with children. I can also accommodate schedules for flexible lesson time options and am adaptable to each student’s moods and shifting priorities.
