Hello, my name is Raj Balakrishna and I’m excited to be a tutor on Wyzant! I’m currently an undergraduate junior studying mathematics and business with concentrations in finance and computing/data science at New York University and hope to enter the financial services industry after college. That said, I am very passionate about mathematics and its many applications. Since high school I’ve dedicated most of my academics towards computer science and mathematics, and I hope to share the knowledge that I’ve gained with students in need of assistance. In my sophomore year of high school, I began regularly tutoring students at Cochran Elementary School in K-5 mathematics content and continued doing so until I moved out of town for college. Not only did I enjoy the tutoring process, but I also gained an unmatched sense of satisfaction from seeing my students understand topics that were once foreign to them.
Now, in college, I help my friends and classmates with a wide range of quantitative topics when needed, including physics, finance, computer science, and of course mathematics. Additionally, I am the Co-Director of my academic club’s Research Team, where I’m instructing a batch of college students on finance and accounting concepts. I’ve already learned so much about how to improve my teaching style from being in this position, and I’m eager to keep improving my practice!
Across these experiences, I’ve learned a lot about how to properly teach new content to students. First and foremost, I’ve found that patience is key, followed closely by a sense of understanding. Moreover, visualization goes a long way especially in the field of mathematics. Lastly, I believe real-life application and consistent practice play a crucial role in the development of mathematics and thus aim to integrate these things into my teaching style.
