My education at UCSB's College of Creative Studies has uniquely prepared me to guide students through the challenges of standardized test preparation, academic, and creative writing. Having excelled in a program built entirely around daily workshops, peer review, and collaborative revision, I understand not just how to write well, but also how to teach writing as a process. My coursework across genres, from research essays on public transport policy to creative writing in fiction to film analysis, has given me the versatility to help students tackle any humanities assignment—whether they're struggling with a close reading of Shakespeare or structuring a history research paper. My senior thesis work, which required the complex philosophical text that is Susan Sontag's "On Photography," into accessible arguments, demonstrates my ability to break down sophisticated concepts into manageable steps that students and readers can understand and apply.
My tutoring experience at UCSB's CLAS helped develop my ability to adapt instruction to individual learning styles and needs. I've fostered an intuitive sense for when students require more structured guidance versus when they benefit from more open-ended exploration, tailoring my approach to maximize each student's potential. The intensive workshop culture of your Creative Studies program, where I spent years in daily peer feedback sessions, taught me how to deliver criticism constructively while building writers' confidence. I understand how to identify patterns in student writing, whether it's organizational challenges, thesis development issues, or difficulty with textual evidence; I've mastered providing targeted feedback that addresses root problems rather than just surface corrections. I can meet students wherever they are in their writing journey.
