Hi, I'm Catherine. I have always been a strong student at all levels of schooling, and particularly excelled in STEM fields, particularly math and computer science. I graduated cum laude from Northwestern (B.A. in Economics and Political Science, with a Kellogg certificate Financial Economics), and I hold a M.S. in Analytics from the Georgia Institute of Technology. My M.S. coursework involved extensive math, statistics, and computer programming coursework. Prior to those degrees, I also graduated cum laude from a very selective high school.
I worked in leveraged financing on Wall Street for over seven years, but left the field since I felt unfulfilled. Thus, I went back to school for my Master's, and during my studies, I became a Teaching Assistant for a class in my degree program. I elected to continue in this role after graduation, helping teach graduate students. Since I have always been a strong student and excelled at distilling complex concepts into simple principles, I thought tutoring may be a great path that leverages my strengths.
I do not have a traditional teaching background, but I can offer direct one on one work to older students (high school and up, but older middle schoolers may be considered on a case by case basis). In my teaching assistant work, I try to make my office hours as dynamic and interactive as possible, and use visuals to illustrate concepts. When tutoring, I like to teach concepts through application, by solving problems or answering questions together. In the days before a session, I would ask the student to send me relevant assignments and class materials so I can review what they have learned and how they learned it so far.
To start, I offer my services in math (all levels through and including linear algebra), and test prep (SHSAT, SAT, GMAT, ACT, AP exams). I am open to both remote and in-person tutoring sessions. In-person sessions are limited to Manhattan below 125th Street, and certain Brooklyn neighborhoods. My in-person rate would be higher, starting at $85/hr.
