Hello and welcome! My name is Christopher Buchenholz, and I’m a composer and professor of music who has spent my career helping students unlock the skills that make music come alive. I hold both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School, as well as a doctorate from Columbia University, which I completed with distinction — an honor rarely awarded. Alongside my academic background, I am an active, working composer, which means I bring both professional experience and practical insight into every lesson. For over 30 years, I have taught music theory, ear training, sight-singing, musicianship, and composition at the university level, and I love making these subjects approachable for musicians of all levels.
My teaching philosophy is simple: learning music should feel like making music. My method is progressive and student-focused, with each lesson tailored to the individual’s needs and goals. I have a particular knack for demystifying complex concepts, breaking them down into clear, manageable steps. At the same time, I keep lessons engaging, interactive, and fun — so that students stay motivated and confident. Whether you’re an absolute beginner, preparing for auditions, brushing up on fundamentals, or taking your composing and performing to the next level, I’ll meet you where you are and help you move forward. Above all, I want you to leave every lesson with practical skills, deeper understanding, and a stronger connection to the music you love.
