Hello! I'm Marty, and I graduated cum laude from Yale with a double major in Humanities and Music. I have two years of experience assisting high school students one-on-one with writing, test prep, and college essays. I also spent the last two years helping teach elementary school students (3rd-5th grade) in a full classroom setting, so my tutoring background covers many settings and levels. My approach to tutoring varies to suit the needs and learning style of each individual, taking into account age, interests, and personality. However, some constants in my work are my enthusiasm for literature and my desire to highlight the fun, creative capabilities of language for those who work with me.

I work as a teaching artist, and my default method is to present an interesting "entry point" to the material to allow the participant to engage with the topic for themselves before I begin offering guidance and information. I also take a more hands-on approach, giving those I work with many opportunities to try interpreting and practicing the material. Finally, I am able to provide some ADHD study strategies, having applied many of them to myself, and if one method isn't working, I won't give up. I am willing to provide as much extra help as it takes to feel confident about reading comprehension and writing!

General Music

General Music

I partnered with a teacher from the NYC Department of Education for two years and learned how to teach general music in an elementary school setting. My training also included weekly professional development sessions on how to teach students to read music, learn rhythms, and sing together. The instruments in this setting included classroom percussion instruments such as hand drums, shakers, triangles, and claves.
Music History

Music History

I took various courses on the history of Western music as part of both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. These courses spanned from the Renaissance and Early Baroque to the modern day, and the course textbook was Richard Taruskin's highly regarded Oxford History of Western Music. I also took some classes focusing specifically on Mahler's symphonies, the history of libretto and opera, and the history of Irish music. My work as a musician keeps my memory for music history sharp.
