After 10 years in professional journalism, I pivoted to education, where I began teaching high school English and AP Language and Composition. For the past five years, I've worked with New York City high schoolers to help craft thoughtful, original, technically-pristine, and Ivy League-worthy college essays. My method is one born from my years teaching students with a wide range of writing skills and needs as well as my own professional experiences. As a writer and editor, I worked both full time and freelance reporting and editing for both print and digital publications, including Slate, Catapult, Literary Hub, Publisher’s Weekly, Electric Literature, The Rumpus, MEL Magazine, Eater, VinePair, InsideHook, Hyperallergic, LA Weekly, Bustle, The Nation, Cultured and more. In 2021, my essay on the links between biodynamic farming and fascism was featured in Best American Food Writing.

As a career changer with a diversity of professional experiences, I am well suited to dive into the psyche of a student's desired essay outcomes. Through voice-to-text, timed excercises, free, writing, and whiteout text-based exercises, I work to eliminate the exterior stressors and anxieties that too-often color the college application process and allow my students to embark on a process that is entirely personal and without distraction.

My students have been accepted to a broad host of colleges and universities, ranging from top SUNY and CUNY schools, including Macaulay Honors College; Little Ivies like Middlebury College and Amherst College; top universities including NYU (full scholarship), Stanford University, and USC (full scholarship); top music conservatories including the Juilliard School and New England Conservatory; and Ivy League universities including Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy theater, music, frequenting museums, and spending time with my family.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

Throughout my decade-plus-long career as a writer, I dedicated many years to creative nonfiction essay writing, ultimately winning a Los Angeles Press Club Award from creative nonfiction essay writing and having several personal creative essays published in major news outlets and literary magazines. I have also taught many high school aged students the art of writing poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
English

English

I have taught English in the New York City public school system for several years. I am also a published reporter and essayist and hold two masters degrees in both Journalism and Secondary English Education. My experience as an English tutor is all encompassing, ranging from reading comprehension to essay writing and grammar.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

My ethos as a writing teacher is one which amounts to the idea that an essay writing teacher must feel confident in their own ability to write, edit, and proofread essays. As an English major in college and as a Journalism student enrolled in the graduate Arts Journalism program at the University of Southern California, I spent many years writing longform journalism features and research papers on works of literature, media literacy, and cultural phenomena. I feel confident that my own work directly impacts how I approach writing with my students, allowing me to meet them where they are and delivery a variety of strategies to bring text to paper.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

As an AP Language and Composition teacher, I work with students on a daily basis helping them craft specific, arguable, and viable thesis statements. My classroom and out-of-classroom with with young writers centers on the idea that a thesis should be "thread-able," meaning it should appear like a shadow or set of footprints throughout the essay and must not live and die in the introductory paragraph alone. My students have the opportunity to discover a variety of thesis formats, including one-sentence thesis statements, comparative thesis statements, rhetorical analysis thesis statements, and extended thesis statements.
