I am a linguist by profession with over 25 years of experience. I tutor in Russian, Finnish and Lithuanian beginners, intermediate, and advanced level students. I hold a Master’s degree in Russian and Finnish languages and literature from Sankt Petersburg State University, Russia. I lived and worked in Lithuania, Russia, and Finland before relocating to the US. I have been tutoring Russian language on and off for 15+ years in group- or private-class settings. The subjects I teach are grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and language needed for travel. The age group I prefer to tutor are people over 18 years old.
My teaching style is quite universal: I use textbooks (I encourage my students to buy a book based on my recommendations) and supplement it with lots of exercises from other sources or materials developed by myself. Normally, each lesson starts with a repetition of learnt material, drills, checking homework and Q&A, and then follows with introduction of a new topic. During lessons, I try to engage my students to speak, read, and actively communicate. My lessons are rather more engagement and drills than my lecturing on a specific grammar topic. I think this way because I believe that textbooks we use in the class have all the topics explained and my role as a tutor is to start applying all grammar rules and practicing more during the lesson.
I am trilingual and teach Russian, Finnish, and my native language Lithuanian as I have explained above.
