Hello, I’m Carolyne!

I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2022, and I am currently attending Columbia University as a Master's student. I have 12 years experience as a tutor, and I'm excited to meet more students! I have tutored students in math (elementary, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Statistics), science (chemistry, biology, AP Biology), and English (writing, grammar) in various settings including peer, volunteer, and paid tutoring. I've tutored through school-directed programs, ClubZ! In-Home Tutoring (high school math, AP Biology), Grade Potential Tutoring (AP Stats, Algebra 1), and GiGi's Playhouse (elementary/middle school math) in both one-to-one and small group settings. I also co-facilitated an undergraduate course at UC Berkeley on CRISPR. Now, I focus my expertise on math, biology and ACT test prep.

In college, I majored in Molecular and Cell Biology, with an emphasis in genetics. I took coursework in Calculus I and II, Discrete Math, general sciences, genetics, biochemistry, developmental biology, Earth science, and, of course, humanities/writing courses. In high school, I scored a 34 (99th percentile) on the ACT and earned the IB Diploma. I took both AP and IB coursework, so I understand the testing strategies needed to pass the standardized exams.

As a tutor, I emphasize the importance of understanding each student's learning style. I ensure that I am patient, compassionate, and encouraging so that my student feels confident approaching their learning.creativity and enjoyment when it comes to learning math. I like to offer study tips and employ problem-solving skills so that the student can succeed independently.

Math, science, and exam prep can be incredible intimidating and challenging. My goal as a tutor is to relieve anxieties, offer support, instill enthusiasm, and break down advanced concepts while embracing the learning process.

Biology

Biology

Biology has been my favorite subject since I was a freshman in high school. I had an amazing teacher who loved the field so much it instilled a similar passion in me, and inspired me to get my degree in biology. After graduating, I spent two and a half years working as Research Associate/Lab Manager at a prestigious academic biology research lab, specifically studying how changing environments affect plant physiology. However, my expertise is in genetics. I loved learning about biology freshman year because it gave me a better understanding of the world around me. While my goal as a biology tutor is for my students to gain confidence and ace the course, my dream is to instill a similar appreciation in my students.
College Counseling

College Counseling

Applying to college was an overwhelming experience for me in high school. The process felt incredibly complex, almost as if it were designed to be impossible. Despite these challenges, I applied to 14 schools, received no rejections, and was awarded full-tuition scholarships from Top 40 universities, along with partial scholarships from Top 20 universities. Since graduating, I have informally mentored high school and college students, offering guidance on college applications, transfer applications, MD/DO/OT applications, scholarships, personal statements, career paths, majors, and internships. As I navigate my own graduate school applications, I fully understand the pressure and complexity of the process, and my skills remain finely tuned. Additionally, I have spent the past year volunteering as a crisis counselor, further honing my ability to provide support and guidance during challenging times.
Genetics

Genetics

During my undergraduate studies in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis in Genetics, I developed a strong foundation in genetic principles and techniques. I excelled in courses such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, and The Human Genome, and Environmental Change Genetics. I also facilitated a course on CRISPR at UC Berkeley, where had the opportunity to guide and support my peers in learning about its applications and ethical implications. Additionally, I spent 2.5 years working in a research lab focused on using genetic tools to study plants. In this role, I applied techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, gene cloning, oligo synthesis, and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing to investigate how specific genes affect plant growth and response to environmental stress.
