Hey all! Mark here. I'm a proud Penn State alum (go Nittany Lions!), having graduated with a BS in Microbiology, minor in Economics, and minor in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. While I do not have much previous experience as a formal tutor, I have previous experience as a Teaching Assistant for Intermediate Macroeconomics and for Introductory Microbiology Laboratory from my Penn State years. I also have an MBA from Columbia University, where I graduated with honors. I've always been pretty good with numbers, which has proven to be beneficial to me in my corporate career, and I would love to tutor primarily middle school and high school math for now, although I may branch into science, economics, business/finance, and/or Microsoft Excel in the future.
I would describe my teaching method as probing in nature, with nudges in the right direction when needed. I would try to guide each student to the right answer to each question by asking targeted questions that would help him/her ultimately solve the problem himself/herself. I used this approach quite often as a Teaching Assistant and found it to be not only effective, but rewarding as well, when I could see the AHA! moment on the student's face as he/she figured out the solution. If there are alternative methods to solving the problem, I would also bring them up and walk the student through those solutions to expand his/her toolkit.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback, positive or negative, as I develop my tutoring abilities. I strongly feel that constructive feedback would be beneficial for myself as well as for any student who would like to be tutored by me. Please note that I have a 24-hr cancellation policy, so please do your best to let me know if you need to cancel a session at least 24 hours before the scheduled session. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
