Hello, I'm Sofia! I graduated from Columbia University in May 2024 with a degree in comparative literature, specializing in French. Over the past 4 years, I have tutored high schoolers in grades 9-12 in writing and French on a weekly or twice a week basis. I typically work one-on-one, but I am open to group sessions. I develop my own curriculum, constantly adapting my methods according to students' individual needs. I make sure to teach not only content, but study methods as well. It is important to me that students develop the skills they need to study independently.
My background:
I have studied French for 10 years, including 2 study abroad programs, and 9 courses conducted only in French. I also have extensive writing experience--in addition to the vast quantities of academic writing I've done for my degree, I was a newspaper editorial intern and a staff writer for Columbia's undergraduate magazine, The Blue & White.
My methodology:
My passion for teaching was instilled in me at a young age. I watched my mother tutor and home school teach throughout my childhood, and I would admire her gentle way of guiding students to understanding. In college, I began tutoring high schoolers myself. Watching my students grow and feel increasingly confident in themselves has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
For French students, my curriculum consists not only of grammar and vocabulary exercises, but plenty of conversation. If you're learning a language, you want to be able to chat in it, non? For writing students, I focus not only on grammar and syntax, but on developing thoughtful and complex ideas. If you're not inspired but what you're writing, you're teacher probably won't be either! In my sessions, we'll practice analysis and thesis development using the latest short stories from the New Yorker, episodes from the History Channel, or your favorite music video. Let's develop your voice as a writer, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly and engagingly.
