After 13 years at the Yeshivah of Flatbush (k-12), a writing degree from Barnard (with minors in architecture and psychology) and graduate school at Teachers College, I am fluent in Hebrew (and English!), well-versed in Judaism, and experienced in working with students of all ages and abilities.

These skills are further enhanced by decades of piano and voice lessons, choral singing, participation in women's tefillah groups, Braille transcribing, and editing. I have tutoring experience going all the way back to high school, and am now looking to expand my clientele.
My tutoring experience covers bar/bat mitzvah, cantillation (for kids and adults), Jewish literacy (similar to Hebrew School), and test prep. I also have taught writing skills to help students organize essays, term papers, and theses, as well as music (reading, etc.). I like to incorporate the student's interests to make the subject more relatable, and provide interesting activities (such as baking cookies!) to bring my lessons to life. By combining my various areas of knowledge, I can help with everything from learning to read Hebrew and chanting the Torah portion to writing a speech and thank-you notes.

I am patient with students of all levels and learning abilities, whether in person or on Zoom. I want our time together to be something we will both remember fondly.

Bar Mitzvah

Bar Mitzvah

A graduate of Yeshivah of Flatbush, Barnard College, and Teachers College (Columbia), I have over 30 years of experience preparing bar and bat mitzvah students. I regularly chant Torah and other parts of Tanakh (Bible) and am an experienced choral singer with a big enough vocal range to accommodate changing voices. Lessons can include (as needed) Hebrew reading, cantillation, leading prayers, writing a speech, and more. Students with different learning needs are also welcome.
Braille

Braille

I worked at a library for the blind for over two decades, eventually becoming the senior braillist. I specialize in both English (UEB) and Hebrew braille. As an experienced tutor in several other fields, I would be help you learn braille, too!
Cooking

Cooking

As someone who keeps a kosher kitchen, I easily adapt not only to those requirements, but to other dietary limitations as well, such as dairy or gluten free, vegetarian or vegan, etc., not to mention working around the availability of equipment. My culinary contributions are often requested at holiday gatherings and birthday celebrations, and my recipes have been included in community cookbooks. Whether you are living on your own for the first time or adjusting to kashrut or to doctor's orders, I can help you learn to prepare everyday basics and special occasion treats!
Hebrew

Hebrew

I am a graduate of the Yeshivah of Flatbush, where I became fluent in Hebrew and familiar with major Jewish texts, from Tanach to Talmud to liturgy and literature. I went on to lead women's services, assist regional groups, and give Bar/Bat Mitzvah lessons and related tutoring, such as Jewish literacy (similar to Hebrew School) and Hebrew test prep (e.g., NYS Regents exam). I have worked with children, teens, and adults; Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Jews; and all levels of experience and ability, including gifted children, and those with learning or visual impairments.
Writing

Writing

After many years of writing and editing, from my high school newspaper to my college yearbook to a company magazine, I've developed some handy tricks to help people write organized, coherent texts. These skills allowed me to write books, theses, and a dissertation. I've helped students learn to write term papers and answer essay questions with time limits, compose speeches and presentations, and put together effective letters. I look forward to helping you!
