Hello, I’m Giovanni! I graduated from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy and minors in Creative Writing and Data Science. When I first entered college I was a planned Math major, but by the end of my first year I realized that what I truly valued was connecting with people. Part of this switch was reinterpreting my senior year of high school, in which I was a paid Calculus tutor at the University of Milwaukee. I realized that while I loved math, what made that position so enjoyable was being able to actively support my students and see the effects, from improved grades to simply enjoying math more. This is instilled from years of helping tutor my younger siblings. I have eight younger siblings who my mother decided to take out of public school and privately teach. Over the next four years I played a big role in their education, covering subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic, English, Literature, and Physics for ages ranging from 5-15 years old. Through that experience I developed an incredible repertoire of skills for teaching multiple subjects for multiple ages. Oftentimes I would sit down with a student and work with them one-on-one throughout the day, giving personalized teaching and advice.
In college, I focused on my ability to communicate through writing. Since then, I have taken multiple workshops and participated in many writing groups in which I have written, edited, and proofread anything from fictional stories to philosophy papers to English essays to application materials. Although I am highly specialized in both Math, from Arithmetic to Calculus, and Writing, my basic pedagogy remains the same. I stand by that for anyone to learn, they must develop some form of appreciation for the subject. In addition, learning is doing, and therefore, I heavily emphasize guided walkthroughs and exercises, in some ways similar to job shadowing.
Of course, this varies by age and subject, and I highly encourage you to reach out with questions or to schedule a lesson!
