Hey there! My name is Bill. I have a BA in English from Georgetown University and an MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University. When I was in school, writers like Arthur Miller and David Mamet taught me about not only writing—but also something else: the power of words. When I work with students—as I’ve done over 25 years as a book author and magazine editor making school visits—I love seeing the flash in students’ eyes as they successfully tap into their own word power. I always bring the same patience, level of engagement, and availability that my favorite writing and English teachers showed me on my own educational journey.

It's important to me that students feel respected and listened to. I’ve discovered that every kid has unique stories, including ones they love to read and ones they love to tell. I use the tools I’ve picked up over the years as a bestselling author to help students discover those stories for themselves. I also help kids connect their reading of literature to their own writing, and how they can use literary devices they come across in books in their own storytelling.

I’ve been a teaching assistant at the college level and I’ve created educational experiences for students from kindergarten through high school. But I think my skillset is humming at its best when I work with kids who are in third through eighth grade.

Thanks for reading about me. If I can answer any questions or if you’d like to schedule a lesson, please get in touch. I’m readily available and will get right back to you.

Writing

As a bestselling author of books that have sold more than 2,000,000 copies, I have decades experience as a writer, editor, and teacher. Building off my degrees from Georgetown and NYU, I have created multiple series for Random House, Scholastic, and Little Brown and have overseen publications, including TIME For Kids and Scholastic News. I have led workshops at large institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, teaching students how to create their own interactive stories.

Phenomenal Tutor With Rare Ability

Bill is an incredible teacher; he is so knowledgable about language, structure, syntax etc. But more than his impressive prowess with these important technical and practical aspects of writing, is his almost preternatural awareness of, and love for, the power of words. He helped me to consider every choice, in every sentence so that I was able to utilize words as effectively, efficiently and accurately as possible, all the better to tell my stories. From simple exercises that gave me "aha!" moments of learning, to explaining and discussing complex approaches, Bill's advice and guiding will aid me in making my writing more sensitive and attuned to the moods and sensibilities I am trying to share with with my audiences. I cannot recommend Bill highly enough, for any age of writer, at any stage in their career. Our lesson was a supercharged injection of intellectual and literary expansion—just what I needed.
