I'm Ben, a math tutor in New York City. I started tutoring my fellow students in college, and quickly found it to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. After graduating with High Honors in mathematics with minors in physics and computer science, I started working at a tutoring center for students ages 7-16 in the Boston area. I eventually left this behind to move to New York for grad school, where I was the primary instructor for a variety of math courses at City College, including College Algebra and Trigonometry, Precalc, and Calculus. After completing my PhD (focused on set theory and mathematical logic), I'm excited to return to working with students in a one-on-one rather than lecture setting.

My approach is identify the key concepts and techniques a student is struggling with, then resolve those confusions through a combination of finding explanations that resonate with the individual student and guiding the student through practice problems. I believe that when explained clearly, math can be one of the most fascinating things in the world, and I hope to share that experience with my students.

My main tutoring specialty is high school and early college math (Algebra 1 and 2, trig, precalc, calculus, linear algebra, etc.) Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

In the year before grad school, I worked with multiple high school algebra students at a tutoring center. While working on my PhD, I was the primary instructor for sections of College Algebra at City College for three semesters, including both online and in-person sections. During that time, I focused on developing the clearest and most accessible explanations of core algebra concepts, and I'm excited to apply what I've learned to tutoring.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

In college, I was a math major and computer science minor, so I studied discrete math and combinatorics from a variety of perspectives. In grad school, I studied set theory and mathematical logic, which generalize concepts from discrete math to more abstract settings. I have also worked with a number of math and CS students over the years to improve their skills in this area.
Logic

Logic

Logic has been one of the areas I have been most passionate about for the past decade. In college, in addition to taking the introductory mathematical logic course and auditing the Advanced Logic course in the philosophy department, I spent most summers teaching myself further topics in mathematical logic from textbooks. In grad school, I specialized in and wrote my dissertation about set theory, a subfield of logic.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

Between college and grad school, I took five semesters of real analysis, as well as three of complex analysis. I also specialized in set theory, an area with some overlap with analysis. As an undergraduate, I worked in an on-campus tutoring clinic where I helped several real analysis students (along with many other subjects), and I tutored a few more on Wyzant before real analysis was added as an official subject
