With over 14 years of experience as a certified math teacher, I have been instructing students across a range of math courses, including Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2/Trigonometry, and Precalculus. I graduated from Moscow State University with my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mathematics with honors and then completed the Wharton Management Certificate Program at the University of Pennsylvania. I later received my advanced certificate from the Graduate School of Education with dual certification in secondary mathematics and secondary mathematics for students with disabilities.
For the last 10 years, I have been a Math for America Master Teacher and have been working with students in grades 9 to 12. While in my math classes and during one-on-one afterschool sessions, I have been focusing on supporting struggling kids and students with ADHD, ASD, and anxiety. I have been helping them uncover their hidden potential and feel better emotionally. My students became confident and persistent learners and some of them fell in love with math and decided to continue their math studies in college.
I usually start my sessions with a brief pre-assessment of skills and knowledge gaps. I ask my students to work on a few simple problems related to a particular topic so I can see if they struggle with conceptual understanding or fluency. If I know my students’ challenges and misconceptions, I can plan an effective lesson that is tailored to their needs and strengths. I also try to make learning math more engaging and enjoyable. First, I work together with my students on a few modeled examples and introduce efficient problem-solving approaches and then I let them practice with a thoughtfully created problem set. While my students are exploring the math behind the problems from basic ones to more challenging ones, I provide support and feedback. My goal is to help them not to be afraid to try new strategies, learn from their mistakes, and turn their math challenges into successes.
