Hello!

My name is Leah and I've been teaching and tutoring for my entire adult life. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Cinematic Arts, a Master's in American Studies with an emphasis on the relationship between history, cultural studies, and storytelling, and a Masters in Education. I'm certified as a 7-12th grade English teacher and I currently teach English at a special needs high school, where I also support the music department and serve as Director of Educational Programming.

When I'm not teaching, I'm usually running, reading, or at the movie theater. I have an insatiable interest in understanding the human experience through all avenues - whether that means psychology, film, or simply people watching in my fabulous home city of New York. I bring my enthusiasm for exploration to my teaching as well, where I emphasize positive relationships, growth mindset, and personal growth as key elements of any learning experience.

Among my students and peers, I'm known for my positive presence, my organization, and my high standards - high support approach. I'm also known for my dedication to my students, specifically to helping them to unleash their own potential and use learning as a way to better equip themselves for the incredible lives that lay ahead. I look forward to learning with you!

Approved Subjects

College Counseling

College Counseling

During my time as an educator, I have worked with countless students on college essay writing, which is a very specific form. I can guide students from prompt selection through a final draft that they're proud of. When it comes to other decisions that are part of the college admission and decision process, I rely on my experience as a mentor, through which I have counseled seniors to help them make the decisions that they feel good about.
English

English

I view English as the subject that most directly teaches us how to express ourselves and interact with each other. These are some of the most important skills that we can build for ourselves! I have experience teaching English to all ages, specializing in delivering necessary English skills through innovative content.
Proofreading

Proofreading

English has so many rules and it's frustrating when you know what you want to say but not the rules for how to say it! My job is to ensure that your writing has the polish it needs to help you best express your ideas. I have been proofreading writing of all kinds personally and professionally for over ten years.
Reading

Reading

Reading is an incredibly complex job for our brains; it requires us to decode words, comprehend ideas, and apply critical thinking skills to make sense of what's in front of us. As someone who currently teaches English and has tutored for many years, I can help you to read diverse texts and to strengthen any of the skills you might need in order to best work with them.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I teach English at a specialized high school and accommodating students with IEPs is part of my daily work. I work with students who have learning disabilities, mental health challenges, neurodivergence, and more. I combine my relationship-first approach with psychological and pedagogical knowledge of a student's diagnosis to work in unique ways with each student.
Writing

Writing

Writing can sometimes seem mystifying, but my job is to help you discover just how empowering it can be. I have worked with students of all ages and in all types of writing, from argumentative to research to even writing songs. I have the expertise to support you at any step of the writing process.
