My name is Kervens (pronounced KUR-vehns), and I'm an experienced tutor/teacher specializing in queer & neurodivergent children. I myself am a member of both the LGBTQ community and the neurodivergent community, which is why my childhood experiences inspired me to get into the field of teaching. I am currently finishing my BA in Political Science at a CUNY, which I started at The New School. While studying there, I started tutoring math as a way to make extra money between classes, but I found it to be a much more rewarding experience than I ever imagined. Before I left The New School, I completed a program called Generation Citizen, which allowed qualified college students to teach a 7th-grade civics class for a few months. In addition to this and my previous informal tutoring experience, I later obtained a job at Mathnasium, a learning center for K-12 students specializing in mathematics. I worked at Mathnasium from November 2019 until September 2021, when I moved on to start my own private math tutoring service. However, as fulfilling as that was, it was also much more than I could handle on my own. Now, I work at a local NYC museum called the Children's Museum of the Arts, where I teach art classes to elementary & middle school students. At the end of the day, I strive to become the teacher I wish I'd had in school.

My primary tutoring experiences have been with students who are either homeschooled or enrolled in public or charter schools with a personalized IOP. Although I enjoy working with all kinds of students, my past experience has most qualified me to work with children who have autism, ADHD, OCD, or executive dysfunction. For math tutoring, each student is required to have a free consultation before the first session - this is to figure out the student's strengths & weaknesses in order to create an appropriate learning plan. All other subject lessons may have a free consultation before the first session if the parents prefer.
