Hi, I’m Nick. I have been interested in mathematics from a young age, which led to my majoring in mathematics in college and then obtaining a Ph.D. in mathematics from UC Berkeley. In graduate school I was a TA for honors undergraduate calculus courses and graduate courses in functional analysis, measure theory, and probability theory, which was the topic of my dissertation. Since graduating I have had diverse teaching experiences: devising math activities for 5-7 year olds at a YMCA summer camp, and working with high school math teachers in a public school in east Oakland. I have extensive experience tutoring students at all levels and in almost every aspect of mathematics, including elementary school, middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate students, in short grade school to grad school.

I enjoy working one-on-one with students and providing the individual attention which really helps them develop the conceptual understanding they need in mathematics. My approach is to work patiently with the student, endeavoring to see their understanding of the problem at hand, and explaining why this will or won't work. If they are really stuck I will prompt them with a suggestion of what to do. Often students have an idea of what to do, but don't know how to express that in writing. In this situation I will provide a model of how to write a reasoned argument which they can adapt for similar problems.

I am happy to meet students in their home or in a public place such as a library. My schedule is flexible and my fee is negotiable in case of financial need.

Nick is a knowledgeable, patient, insightful tutor for children and adults

I met Nick when I needed a tutor in a graduate-level statistics class. He helped me so much that when I wanted a tutor to prepare my twin boys for pre-algebra, I asked him to work with them. He recently referred us to Wyzant but he has been tutoring my sons since the spring semester 2022. He has been very effective in working with their very different learning styles. He is exceptionally patient, but his real strength is his ability to guide them so that they can figure things out on their own. Their sense of accomplishment and increased interest in math has been very rewarding to see. After a somewhat lackluster performance in the fall semester (2021), one of my sons did so well in the spring (2022) that he was moved to the most demanding math class this year. My other son had already been placed in the most demanding group, but he told me that Nick made math so much fun that he wants to become a math teacher himself. This academic year, in addition to helping them with their homework, he has been training them to become calmer, more thoughtful test-takers. On the basis of my experience working with Nick and the tutoring he has done with my sons, I have been impressed with his ability to work with students at different levels, his enthusiasm for math, and the careful attention he pays to each student’s learning style and confidence level.
