About Kenneth

Hello! I am a tutor and teacher with strong experience working in the classroom, and supporting students in a variety of subjects and content areas. I have taught and tutored students in Social Studies (US and Global History), middle and high school-level English/English Language Arts, middle school Mathematics, Algebra, as well as organization and executive functioning. As a teacher, I have gained invaluable knowledge serving in three school districts, while actively growing and developing as an educator. In my bag of teaching tools are strategies and techniques that help students create visuals for abstract concepts, read fiction and nonfiction texts closely and actively, problem solve, and produce strong pieces of writing. I strive to help students become stronger thinkers and learners, and I am dedicated to the success of all.

Teaching and tutoring began for me during high school, while informally helping friends and peers with Geometry and Calculus problem sets, Social Studies research papers and Science projects. I enjoyed helping others become successful in the classroom, and carried that same passion and dedication into my career as an educator. I am patient and will work hard to support the needs of each and every student.

Contact me if you have questions, or want to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

As a certified Special Education teacher, I currently work with students diagnosed with ADD and ADHD that receive program modifications and accommodations through an IEP and Section 504 Plan. In addition, I consult with teachers of students with ADD and ADHD, and teach a support class that helps students develop executive functioning, organization and study skills. As a teacher, I have implemented and am familiar with the various accommodations (i.e. refocusing and redirecting, checking for understanding, restating directions, use of graphic organizers, etc.) that students diagnosed with ADD and ADHD receive in the classroom and during testing settings. I have extensive experience working with students with ADD/ADHD, and am passionate about helping all students succeed.

Algebra 1

Passing the Algebra I (Common Core) Regents exam is critical for placement as well as a graduation requirement for many students. I have worked extensively with middle and high school students in Algebra I as they work to develop proficiency in the subject, and prepare for the Algebra I Common Core Regents exam that covers everything from expressions, equations, inequalities, graphs to word problems. Being able to practice consistently on a variety of Algebra problems, and demonstrate understanding of principles and relationships between variables and values will give students the tools and confidence to succeed in Algebra.

English

With a degree in English, I have always enjoyed developing deep understanding of texts and communicating clearly through writing. I have taught English Language Arts and English at the Middle School and High School levels. As a tutor, I will share active and close reading strategies that are essential for developing comprehension and deep understanding of a variety of texts students will encounter in the classroom and on exams. I will share successful writing strategies that support students in short responses, extended responses, essays and research papers.

Proofreading

Developing highly effective written expression skills is essential for college and career readiness. As an English teacher and tutor, I will share a variety of successful writing strategies that support students in short and extended responses, essays, research papers, resumes, etc. Proofreading is critical for effective written communication. As an educator who has worked with students at the middle school and high school levels developing written voice, ideas and messages I am comfortable providing constructive feedback, proofreading, and making the writing process a positive experience for all students.

Reading

With a degree in English, I have a passion for reading, writing and literature. I previously taught English Language Arts and English at the Middle School and High School levels. Active and close reading are essential skills for developing comprehension and deep understanding of a wide variety of texts. As a tutor, I will share a number of reading strategies that will help students identify main idea, supporting details and themes among other literary techniques and elements within a piece of text.

Regents

While teaching at the high school level, I have taught Regents level classes and helped many students prepare and pass a variety of Regents exams. I have taught Global History I and English classes, which resulted in high passing rates on the Regents exams. In addition, I have also supported students in preparing for Algebra and US History Regents exams. I have tutored at the AP Global History and U.S. History level, which also helped my students succeed on the Regents. Preparing for Regents exams requires a thorough review of content, taking practice tests and improving areas of weakness.

Special Needs

I am a certified New York State Special Education teacher (Grades 7-12). I have extensive experience implementing program and testing modifications and/or accommodations within various classroom settings for students with disabilities as mandated in an Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.) or Section 504 Plan. As a special education teacher, I have administered educational evaluations, participated in Committee of Special Education and 504 Committee initial and annual review meetings, and written IEP's and 504 Plans. Through my work as a special education teacher, I have participated in various workshops, courses and certifications aimed at developing effective strategies for working with special needs populations. I enjoy the success I have had and continue to have working with students of all levels, skills, aptitudes and abilities.
