Hello! My name is Eric! I have a Ph.D. in linguistics, with backgrounds in sociology and history, and I have both taught at, and worked as a professional tutor for, a state university for over 10 years. I have seen first-hand the challenges that college students (of all ages!) face in succeeding in school, and I want to help!

I combine both executive functioning skill development and content-specific tutoring (history, sociology, linguistics) into individualized programs that speak to the strengths of each student, while focusing on areas of improvement. I help students plan for their semesters by guiding them in creating monthly and weekly schedules, and holding them accountable through weekly sessions. I help students craft outstanding essays by guiding them through the essay writing process, from generating ideas to evaluating quality sources, and from essay organization to proofreading. I also work with students in refining their study strategies, finding the best style that works for them. I work with students of all neurological types, including students with ADHD and autism.

Throughout these processes, I remain content-focused, helping students learn and explore the topics that they find most interesting (and, in some cases, helping them find those interesting things!). My first priority is to help students use the knowledge they already have to understand the things they want to know. Students should feel like they're part of the learning process!

Whether you are a current college student who wants to improve their GPA, a high-school student who wants to better prepare for college, or an adult student dipping their toes back into academia, I'm here to help! I'm patient, I'm fun, and I'm really enthusiastic to help students succeed! Many of my students have gone on to graduate schools in the U.S. and Canada, and many others have successfully passed licensure tests (such as teacher certification exams). Essay Writing

Essay Writing

As a college professor and professional tutor for over ten years, I have helped hundreds of students write outstanding essays in a wide variety of subjects, including history, linguistics, and sociology. I work with them throughout the entire process, from generating ideas and helping evaluate quality sources, to helping with essay construction, the draft process, and proofreading. Throughout the entire process, I help the student develop their own individual viewpoints and voices.
Executive Functioning

Executive Functioning

As a professional tutor, I have helped dozens of students develop and refine their executive functioning skills, to allow them to have their best experiences in school and beyond. I work with students to develop and refine critical thinking skills, successful study habits, time-management skills, and class note organizational skills. I pay attention to the specific needs of each individual student I work with, helping them craft their own individualized executive functioning development plan that speaks to their strengths and helps them build in areas of weakness.
Linguistics

Linguistics

I obtained my doctorate in linguistics in 2019 from the CUNY Graduate Center. I also currently teach classes in linguistics and sociolinguistics at the State University of New York at New Paltz. I have also taught classes in linguistics (including Language and Society, and the History of Language) for adults through SUNY New Paltz's Lifetime Learning Institute.
Sociology

Sociology

I have a B.A. in Sociology from Bowdoin College (obtained in 2004). My specialty in linguistics is sociolinguistics, which studies the relationships between people and the language people use. I have also taught classes in sociolinguistics for both college students and older adults.
Study Skills

Study Skills

As a college professor who has taught college-readiness courses, and as a professional tutor, I have worked with students in developing strong study skills that help them gain as much information as they can in their classes and beyond. I help students evaluate their current study skills and craft a holistic study strategy: developing strong in-class note-taking skills, reading and marking up texts, organizing information, and using that information to write outstanding essays and assignments.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Eric is wonderful. He breaks down a complicated subject such as linguistics in a way that is easy to understand. He is also kind and enthusiastic about the subject. I already have my next lesson booked!

Excellent tutor-highly recommend

Eric has tutored me on several occasions for a variety of different linguistic subjects. There’s not one thing that he hasn’t been able to tackle with me. After each session, not only did I walk away feeling way more confident with the content I brought to class, but as a result of our sessions I scored very highly in my exams and papers. I do attribute my results in part to his excellent teaching. A quality of Eric that I find to be most helpful is that he has the ability to put himself in my shoes as a student and recognize what is it that I am needing, bring to light what I could focus on to better my work, and assist me in finding the right path to take that works me for as student to achieve my goals. I really highly recommend him as a tutor for fellow linguistics students and otherwise.

An Expert in his Field

I had some particularly tricky assignments in n the finer points of minimalist syntax theory that I was struggling with. Eric was able to break down the problems step by step and work through them in a way that made them much easier to wrap my head around. He was also already familiar with the relevant literature, and broadly knowledgeable in the topics addressed. Also, he seems like a really nice guy. 10/10, will be coming to him with any other linguistics quandaries I have in the future. Money well spent.

Amazing and clear with explanations

I had a good experience with the tutor. He explained everything that I didn’t understand in a clear manner. He went over the material that I was struggling with and help me understand the basics before getting into the complicated material. He helped me learn the material that I struggle with for weeks. Highly recommend!

Wide range of experience, and happy to share

Fantastic session that broke down complex issues into easy to understand bits. Also good direction to supplementary sources, online and in paper, that were easy to use.

amazing!

Eric was amazing! he explains everything in detail and very well! he is very enthusiastic, and makes the subject actually interesting! He helped me with syntax and morphology which is not easy, but I truly did understand it a lot more after the lesson with him. He was also very accommodating to my schedule and found a time that worked best for me! if you need help with anything linguistics related make sure you reach out to him. also let’s not forget to mention he was prepared and on time to the session, he was on top of the subject and even pulled different sources to help me understand his reasoning! he was the best :)
