Hello! I am a summa cum laude Phi Beta Kappa physics graduate from Skidmore College with a music minor focusing on jazz guitar. I received a 1450 on the SAT and studied abroad at the university of Salamanca where I obtained a certificate in Spanish language. I understand math, physics, music, English, and Spanish at a high level.
I worked at Lake Avenue Elementary as a tutor for two years, where I learned patience and communication of core concepts as I was working with young children on foundational math and reading/writing skills. I have tutored my younger brother for the SAT and precalculus, and have tutored several friends throughout college for calculus, basic physics, and essay writing.
Through these appointments, I have learned how to teach at the appropriate level. Understanding the subject that you are teaching is not enough; you must communicate it in a way that is approachable by the student. I have learned to carefully figure out where the student is at conceptually and build upon that foundation. And if the student is overly confused or frustrated, I work backwards. I return to something they understand, and relate it to what is misunderstood. In this way, they become comfortable moving forward while feeling as if they are in familiar territory. And when they are comfortable, I take the appropriate conceptual leaps while gauging their limits, making sure not to wander too far into work that feels nebulous or unachievable.
