My name is Bruce and I have spent the last decade teaching English on the middle and high school levels. My students really seem to like my easy going ways and the fact that I try to keep everything fun and interesting. A strong emphasis is placed on vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing. Reading is more fun when students can make connections to what they are reading. I love to explore the background of what students are reading in order to foster connections to the material. Vocabulary is extremely important for students to expand their own word bank and to give them a leg up as they transition from one level of reading to another. Furthermore, when students understand what they are reading they are better equipped to write about what they have read. By reflecting on the connections they have made the student will be able to utilize his expanded vocabulary, along with theme, plot and characterization to write about any aspect of the literature or how it relates to him/her. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As you know English is spoken in many countries throughout the world. Like any language how we read, write and understand our native tongue helps us establish a good foundation for success. Today, a lot of young people are more concerned with mastering their slang than learning to use the proper tense of a specific verb. Furthermore, I think it is so important to read as much as you can whenever you can. Reading builds vocabulary and vocabulary is the fuel that propels good writing.
Writing helps us to connect with our inner-self and teaches us how to reflect on life and any aspect of anything that we read. Like I used to always say to my students, reading is everywhere and it will benefit you greatly if you learn to use the language well.
The GED or General Educational Development certificate is an excellent way for a student to complete the requirements needed to finish high school. Whereas the GED certificate is not exactly the same as getting a high school diploma it is an excellent tool to have as one embarks on life's journey. Completing the requirements for the GED depends on the attitude to the student and the amount of work he/she is willing to put into the process. If the student has been out of school for a short while he/she will have to re-acclimate to the study process.
Someone once said that the biggest difference between who we are now and who we will be ten years from now is the books we read. However, this change for the better can be hard to realize if we struggle with comprehension and are unable to retell what we have read. Reading is a part of everyday life and it should be a joy to undertake. Furthermore, reading is so important to being successful; not only in the lower grades, but even more so in college. One of the best ways to build a strong vocabulary is to read on a regular basis. As a teacher I place great emphasis on reading comprehension and vocabulary building. When these two components are developed fully it is easier to respond in writing to what has been read.
SAT reading is designed to test the student's ability to read a passage and then demonstrate how well he/she understands what has just been read. Another name for SAT reading is critical reading. Critical reading questions challenge the student to explain what has been read and describe key components of the passage. By key components I mean, what is the mood of the passage or the author's attitude. Perhaps one or more questions will refer to the main idea of the piece and how the passage is organized. In addition, the student might be asked to talk about the theme or any lesson the passage reveals. Reading passages on the SAT can be short enough to read in a couple of minutes or they may require fifteen minutes to complete. Either way being able to understand and discuss is the prime objective.
The Writing Section of the SAT is designed to show the student's ability to write an essay and to demonstrate the skills necessary to revise sentences using the rules of standard English. In the grammar portion of this writing section the student is tested in his/her ability to improve a piece of writing by revising and editing. Also, the test asks the student to recognize correctly formed grammatical structures. On the other hand, the essay portion of this section of the SAT might ask the student to state a point of view and then support that opinion using direct references from the text. The essay must be written on the spot using the standard conventions of English. In the final analysis, this section of the SAT offers students an opportunity to respond and react in a variety of ways.
I have spent more than a decade teaching ELA to middle and high school students. Last year I worked at a charter school in Brooklyn that was filled with reluctant writers and I guided them through the Critical Lens process and over fifty percent of my students passed the NY State English Regents on their first attempt. Several years ago I worked at a high school and a large percent of our eleventh graders performed poorly on the English Regents in January of that year. Their weakest area was the writing section. So the English department decided to institute a series of writing workshops that we called Writing Workshop Wednesdays. These workshops consisted of writing all kinds of essays, on a variety of topics. We read, discussed and critiqued each essay as a group and then we would rewrite to check progress. Needless to say during the June Regents the vast majority of our students passed the test and a great deal of the credit had to be given to the Writing Workshop Wednesdays.
