Having a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from St. John's University in Jamaica, NY, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a grade point average of 3.96. During my time at St. John's I also received several awards, including membership of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national honorary mathematics society. I graduated from high school at the Great Neck Village School, an alternative high school where many students required a different learning atmosphere than that of a standard American high school. From my experiences at Village School, I understand how there are many different ways that students learn, and many ways that students don't learn.
As someone who has strong capabilities in math, and having been studious my entire life, I thought it would be best to utilize my skills to start helping others. I feel as if I can understand the mindset of a student who needs extra tutoring with a school subject, being that I have sought tutoring many times myself in order to pursue a better understanding of many different topics. While I do not yet have any formal experience teaching or tutoring, on several occasions I have helped my peers and friends with math homework when I was in school. I believe that, in many cases, people struggle with (specifically) math because many math teachers and professors understand the material, but do not understand how to teach it. Speaking from experience, I have taken many college courses with knowledgeable, intelligent professors who have considerably failed at teaching what they know. I am confident that, not only am I skilled at doing math, but that I can successfully help others who are struggling.
I am looking to become an experienced tutor who can eventually begin a career as an actuary, and along the way, I hope to help students achieve a genuine understanding of math and math-related topics.
