Unsure why your Essay grades are low? Struggling to prepare for a History Exam? Confused or Overwhelmed by your Textbook? Need Help with brainstorming, organizing, writing, editing, or strengthening an Essay or Research Paper? Want to maximize your English and AP History grades?

I am a certified and experienced teacher in NYS and CT. I started tutoring AP World History, AP European History, APUSH, and Writing for English classes in Fall 2009. I have successfully helped middle school, AP, IB, Regents, 2E/ IEP, Title 1, and ESL students.

To date, 85% of clients raised their History grades to As within 2 months. 77% of AP World History students scored a 4 or 5. 85% of APUSH students earned a 5. 65% of AP European History students earned a 4 or 5. College students earned B+ or higher in History. In 2022, ⅓ of all AP History students earned a 5. I would love to mentor you next!

I empower teenagers to become stronger students, discerning researchers, innovative thinkers, and compelling writers. I offer empathetic feedback, empowering guidance, and customized instruction. I share sample essays, past exam prompts, and fascinating stories. I utilize graphic organizers, visuals, and multiple study options. I ask questions, model answers, and make suggestions. I even encourage students to think for themselves. Students' knowledge, reading, analysis, and writing skills all improve.

I love to help students as they explore new ways of thinking, document analysis, comparisons across time and space, close reading, and insightful essay writing. Whether teaching how to analyze past events or situations, or to strengthen a written argument, I draw upon multiple approaches verified by cognitive research.

Past clients’ college acceptances include: Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Harvey Mudd, Hillsdale, Holy Cross, Johns Hopkins, Michigan, Northeastern, Notre Dame, NYU, Penn M&T, Pomona, Princeton, Rice, Stanford, Tufts, all UCs, Vanderbilt, and Virginia.

Writing

During the school year, my writing instruction is integrated with Social Studies tutoring, English tutoring, and or summer / college application essay coaching. Over the summer, I offer a special, customized, enrichment module in both creative writing and academic writing. During graduate school, I was trained in multiple methods of effectively teaching writing to middle school students, high school adolescents, and even young adults in college. Along the way, a few professors used excerpts from my written work as examples for classmates who needed to revise and resubmit. I have taught English and History since January 2007, and currently hold teacher certification in two states. My classroom and tutoring instructional experiences have strengthened my ability to guide students through the processes of crafting creative short stories, academic essays, research papers, narrative essays (including the Common App personal statement, supplemental essays, and the UC application essays), and literature reviews. I will teach you how to strengthen and prove an argument, or to present a unique story through showing, not telling. I supplement my writing instruction and editing suggestions with grammar tips and guidelines. Whether you need help with brainstorming techniques, organizing your thoughts into a coherent essay using the perfect graphic organizer, forming and expanding the analytical meat of body paragraphs and conclusions to conclusively prove a thesis, or perfecting the storytelling craft, I would love to mentor you as you improve as a writer!

Sessions often incorporate storytelling, to help students make connections across time and space. Amazing Tutor for my 8th Grader

My daughter was struggling with her analytical writing this year so we looked at a few tutors before deciding to go with Andrea. Andrea assessed my daughter and said she was in line with the skill level of an 8th grader, and didn't see any issues with her writing. Once she realized the school was pushing for work that was equivalent to 9th grade level writing, Andrea was great to pivot. Andrea provides great topics that are interesting to my daughter and actually enjoys working on during the week.

Extremely knowledgeable and patient

My daughter is being tutored on AP World History. In just 2 sessions, she has learned a lot about how to write DBQ’s - much more detailed than her own teacher. Very thorough. My older daughter used her as well and she did well on the AP exam. Would highly recommend!

Extremely helpful !!!!

Andrea helped me finish all of my transfer essays for the fall applications for all UCs and USC! She was one text away to check over anything that needed fixing for my essays and was such a great help with wording and organization that I couldn’t have successfully completed on my own. Highly recommend!

Thorough, Diligent, Skilled Tutor Who Truly Cares

Andrea is exactly the kind of tutor any parent would want for her child. She tutored our 9th grade son in World History AP, and being the first AP class he has ever taken, it proved challenging, as it was a different kind of learning. She is experienced, smart, diligent, but more than anything else, she really cares about the success of the student. She came up with study plans, and also is very flexible with these, taking into account other tests and exams our child had at various times. She was excellent at honing in on the problem areas very quickly, and suggesting various study tools to address those areas. We hope he is able to work with her again next year in APUSH!

Outstanding Writing Tutor for Summer Research Programs

Andrea has helped my daughter in writing essays for summer research programs. Andrea was very knowledgeable and experienced in the essay writing process from brainstorming to reviewing. Also, she was willing to make time for reviewing the essays at short notice. My daughter has already been admitted to some research programs, and we are so thankful for Andrea’s excellent help. Highly recommend her for a writing tutor!
