Hi there! My name is Leo and I am an aerospace and control systems engineer. I completed my Master's at Oxford University with First Class Honours and I have continued at Oxford to pursue a PhD and work as a TA for the university teaching control theory for 3rd year undergraduates. My postgraduate research focuses on designing automatic flight controllers for tiltwing vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft for applications in the emerging air taxi market and investigates how implementing active flow control (AFC) can help prevent wing aerodynamic stall during transition between flight modes.

I am deeply passionate about my subject and I love sharing about the things I am working on with those around me. This has required that I make complex topics easy to understand no matter who my audience is, and I believe that this is an extremely important quality when it comes to teaching. From experience tutoring high school students, college students, and practicing engineers, I have found that often there is a key piece of information lacking which, when identified, brings that "A-ha!" moment. And personally, throughout my years of education, I have found that the best teachers are those which listen diligently to the student and discover exactly what is required in order to bring the understanding to that particular person. This kind of approach, combined with my knowledge of engineering, mathematics, and programming, enables me to bring high-quality teaching to all my tutorials.

I am committed to every student's success, and I am therefore open to any resources or suggestions a student may have. Depending on the complexity of the subject/topic/project you are seeking help with, I may charge for the prep time; this will be discussed on a case-by-case basis. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or to schedule a tutorial!

Calculus

Calculus

As a control systems engineer, mathematics is the name of the game. Every day, I work with dynamical systems requiring knowledge of differential equations, linear algebra, vector calculus, differential geometry, and more. At the root of all this is calculus, which I know like the back of my hand! This level of fluency allows me to break down the topic for students to easily understand.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I am an aerospace and control systems engineer. I completed my Master's at Oxford University with First Class Honours and I am currently pursuing my PhD at Oxford while actively working as a university TA. Differential equations is at the core of my subject, both through my research and teaching control theory to university students.
Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering

I am an aerospace and control systems engineer. I completed my Master's at Oxford University with First Class Honours and I am currently pursuing my PhD at Oxford while actively working as a university TA. My master's thesis consisted of designing a feedback linearization flight controller for a model V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and measuring its performance in terms of dynamic response, disturbance rejection, and robustness to model uncertainty, and my current research involves designing a full-envelope flight controller for a tiltwing aircraft augmented with active flow control to help mitigate aerodynamic stall during transition between flight modes. Both of these projects have required knowledge of electrical engineering and the practical aspects of integrating actuators (e.g. motors, servos) with physical hardware (flight controller boards).
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I am an aerospace and control systems engineer. I completed my Master's at Oxford University with First Class Honours and I am currently pursuing my PhD at Oxford while actively working as a university TA. Linear algebra is at the core of my subject, both through my research and teaching control theory to university students.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have been programming since I was 16. I was formally taught Java and have experience with C and C++. As a control engineer, I use MATLAB and Simulink on a daily basis. Some large-scale MATLAB/Simulink projects I have worked on include developing a mass-compounding model for sizing electric aircraft and designing feedback linearization flight controllers for a model V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and for a full-scale experimental tiltwing aircraft, the latter of which is the focus of my PhD. More recently, I published a paper about trajectory optimization for this tiltwing aircraft, all of which was done in Matlab. My formal programming knowledge combined with my experience as an engineer means that I can guide you through all the joys (and quirks!) that MATLAB has to offer!
Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

I am an aerospace and control systems engineer. I completed my Master's at Oxford University with First Class Honours and I am currently pursuing my PhD at Oxford while actively working as a university TA. I have experience leading Oxford University's formula student team, a team of 60+ engineers working to design and build a formula-style race car.
Physics

Physics

Part of being a control engineer means being able to create complex dynamical models of systems. My knowledge of physics allows me to do this. I have extensive experience working with mechanical systems, but I am also very familiar with circuits, electromagnetism, and other topics in physics both through my research and teaching university students.

terrific tutor with helpful tips and techniques

Had scheduled a couple of lessons for my assignments with Leo, and he is the best tutor that I have ever had. Rather than manipulating me to code, he made the algorithms easier for me to understand, walked me through his thinking processes, and guided me to the correct answers with explicit explanations and clarification. Leo is always helpful, and tbh I have learned way more from him than my professor did. He is the tutor that I would definitely recommend!!

Control systems

He’s an amazing tutor! He’s super patient and really takes the time to explain things clearly. I struggled a lot with control and visualizing it but he was able to help me connect the dots. Thanks to him, I was able to boost my grade from a D to a B!

Great Teacher

Leo is very thorough with his explanations and was able to provide a lot of feedback on various components and their functionalities! Great first time experience with a tutor!

Motivated and highly responsive

Great teacher. The only issue is that, selected material was lacking enough and explanatory drawings. The issues like aerospace dynamics needs better 3D representations and some simulations, e.g. MATLAB simulations.

Leo is a great tutor!

Leo was awesome to work with. Was able to work around a time difference and had great tips for a complicated problem. Very knowledgable. Will definitely reach out again if I have any issues.

Awesome tutor and very patient !

Leo helped me with my linear controls class this summer . He was extremely knowledgeable on the subject and was able to help me understand the topics on a deeper level and understand the “why”. He is also a very good teacher and is awesome at breaking down the material and is really patient . I would 100% recommend tutoring with Leo , he is a life saver !
