Hi there, I'm Christina! I have been working with young people for over 20 years, impactfully serving as a mentor, tutor, life coach and teacher. When I was teaching in the classroom, I taught Pre-Algebra (7th-8th grade math), Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Now, I coach students through these subjects, including College Algebra and providing homeschooling support, online. I have been blessed to help countless students overcome their challenges with math, build confidence, and get to a place where they could persevere through a variety of problems and finally achieve success in their math class, from understanding the material to making incredible gains on their End-of-Course state exams.

My students tell me I'm able to help them be calm so they can focus more on learning, and less on performing. They love the way I break the concepts and material down for them so that they finally and truly understand.

One past student said, "I hated math, but she helped me to overcome my fear of it. I'd recommend her to anyone. She's kind, intelligent, patient, so helpful, and just a great person with a gift for teaching."

Another said, "She was able to help me with math at the point when I was ready to give up...Along with her making it fun and understandable...If I had any troubles with a certain math problem she would be the first person I go to. She is a kind caring woman and has patience with everything. She doesn't give up and is very determined to make sure her students understand the work."

I have a B.S. in Mathematics from Spelman College and extensive graduate-level pedagogical coursework from SUNY Empire State College and Western Governors University, including courses in child & adolescent development, secondary math instruction, and teaching students with special needs. Teaching and tutoring is my passion, and my ultimate goal is to help kiddos truly excel in school and life, while helping them overcome their struggles and anxiety in one of their toughest academic areas, math!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

As a former high school math teacher, I taught Algebra 1 for six years. It's my specialty! I'm a patient, thorough instructor. I don't just show or tell students how to do a problem. I help them access what they already know, and fill in any missing gaps, so they can apply it for themselves. Everyone is capable of learning and doing math, and I love helping students realize that that includes them!
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

As a former high school math teacher, Algebra 2 is one of the courses I taught. I'm a patient and thorough instructor. I don't just show or tell students how to do a problem. I help them access what they already know, and fill in any missing gaps, so they can apply it for themselves. Everyone is capable of learning and doing math, and I love helping students realize that that includes them!
Common Core

Common Core

I took graduate courses specifically about the understanding of Common Core math. Afterwards, I taught high school math for 6 years in a school that used the Common Core Learning Standards. I analyzed the standards to develop curriculum and lesson plans, including learning objectives, that were in proper alignment to the CCLS. I also then delivered instruction/facilitated student learning that was not only aligned to the CCLS but also incorporated the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice, which led students to build effective mental and process habits that helped them pass their courses and state exams, as well as transfer those habits to other classes.
GED

GED

As a former high school math teacher, I taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry, all the math courses one needs to have covered in order to successfully pass the math portion of the GED. I have also been preparing students for the End-of-Course state exams they need for graduation for the past 6 years. I'm a patient and thorough instructor. I don't just show or tell students how to do a problem. I help them access what they already know, and fill in any missing gaps, so they can apply it for themselves. When conducting test prep, I even show students specific tips and tricks to use their graphing calculator more strategically, which helps increase their success when answering questions on their exams. Everyone is capable of learning and doing math, and I love helping students realize that that includes them!

Regents

Regents

I have been preparing students for the Common Core Algebra Regents exam for the past 6 years. For the majority of that time, I analyzed many of the past exams and scored them as well. I used what I learned about student work, mistakes, and successes to develop curriculum and lesson plans specifically for Regents Prep courses, tweaking them for increased effectiveness each administration. I even showed students specific tips and tricks to use their graphing calculator more strategically, which helped increase their success when answering questions on their Regents exam.

Amazing!

Very patient and made sure I thoroughly understood the material we went over during our lesson, also sent the notes from the lesson so I can reference my work. Definitely will recommend 10/10.
