Welcome! I graduated as Valedictorian from St. Joseph’s University, Brooklyn, with my bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in English with Secondary Education and received my master’s in English from Queens College.

I have 20+ years of teaching experience, on the secondary level with a NYS permanent teaching license in English 7-12, and on the college level as a Senior Lecturer in English and Communication Studies. Among the courses I teach are the freshman writing course required in most universities, along with creative writing, communication for professionals, and children’s literature. I am also a published writer and was a finalist for a grant from the Speculative Literature Foundation.

I feel a deep professional responsibility to each one of my students, and I care about them as individuals; I am not just teaching a subject or skill set, but the whole person. My teaching is student-centered, dedicated, compassionate, and enthusiastic.

I offer coaching/tutoring for various middle school, high school, and undergraduate English/ELA subjects, including writing, non-fiction and literature analysis, reading comprehension, and AP Lang and AP Lit.

As an experienced educator and writer, I am passionate about cultivating young people’s unique writing voices. For college application essays, I work with students to shape their writing into well-crafted, personalized, and compelling essays – work that makes them stand out in the highly-competitive world of college admissions. I provide conferences for brainstorming ideas, writing the hook, and planning structure, as well as in-depth written feedback with conferences to discuss and revise drafts together, and proofreading for grammar and mechanics for a polished final copy.

My goals as a writing coach are to ease the stress of the writing process, help students gain confidence in their writing, and make the experience a positive and successful one – wherever they are in the writing process!

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

As a writer, I know how important it is to have other writers that you can turn to for support as well as constructive criticism! As a writer myself AND a creative writing professor, I can help you wherever you are in your creative process -- whether it's strategies to brainstorm ideas, showing vs. telling, characterization, dialogue, description, adding conflict, plot structure, revisions/developmental editing, or any area where you are struggling! I am both a traditionally and independently published author and was a finalist for the Speculative Literature Foundation's Older Writers Grant in 2024. My short work has appeared in Podcastle Magazine, Crow & Cross Keys, and various anthologies. I currently have a novel out on submission. Message me to discuss how I can support you in your creative writing process. I look forward to hearing from a fellow writer!
English

English

I have been an English teacher on the secondary and undergraduate levels for over 20 years, and I have my BA (summa cum laude) in English/Secondary Education (permanent license 7-12, although I have also taught 6th grade) and my MA in English. I am also a traditionally and independently published writer and an avid reader with more books than I have shelves for. I can offer coaching/tutoring in all aspects of English/ELA: literature, reading comprehension, writing, grammar/mechanics, speaking, listening. I pride myself on being a "life-long" English major academic in practice, and I also take great pride in my lengthy career as an English teacher. My undergraduate courses include Writing for Effective Communication, Communication for Professionals, Creative Writing, Poetry, Human Communication (a public speaking course), and Children's Literature. Message me to discuss how I can support you in my favorite subject!
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I have 20+ years of experience teaching essay writing on the secondary and undergraduate levels. Among the courses I teach is Writing for Effective Communication, the freshman writing course that is required in most universities. I am adept at teaching students methods of gathering ideas and then organizing those ideas into a coherent, unified structure with an authentic voice. I provide extensive written feedback, pointing out what was done well and how to improve, and then discussing it with the student and working with them to revise through at least two drafts. I am passionate about cultivating young people’s unique writing voices. My goals are to ease the stress of the writing process, help students gain confidence in their writing, and make the experience a positive and successful one – wherever they are in the essay writing process! I offer coaching for various middle school, high school, and undergraduate writing, including persuasive writing, non-fiction and literature analysis, critical writing, creative writing, personal narratives, the AP Lang and AP Lit essays, and the college application essay. Message me to discuss what support you are looking for in your writing process. I look forward to working with you to make your writing shine!
Fiction Writing

Fiction Writing

My short fiction work has been published in Podcastle Magazine, Crow & Cross Keys, and various anthologies. I currently have a novel on submission. In my creative writing undergraduate course, I taught students how to craft short stories, from brainstorming to character motivation, conflict, and plot, and I gave extensive written and verbal feedback on those stories and led them in peer critiques and editing.
Grammar

Grammar

When I was teaching middle school ELA, mini grammar and mechanics lessons were the bellringers for my classes; as a college writing professor whose students are plagued by comma splices, I still make sure I teach proper grammar and mechanics as needed! I can help writing become professional and polished, and I can help strengthen students' grammar and mechanics skills to the point where proper usage becomes habitual.
Literature

Literature

I have taught literature on the secondary and undergraduate levels for over 20 years, and I have my BA (summa cum laude) in English/Secondary Education (permanent license 7-12, although I have also taught 6th grade) and my MA in English. I am also a traditionally and independently published writer and an avid reader with more books than I have shelves for. I have knowledge of a wide range of literature and can coach/tutor in reading comprehension and literature analysis on the middle school, high school, and undergraduate levels. I am passionate and enthusiastic about reading and literature and can facilitate discussion and teach strategies for better understanding and appreciation. I can also coach/tutor with writing about literature, including AP Lit essays. Message me to discuss how I can help you better understand, analyze, and appreciate a work of literature!
Proofreading

Proofreading

Does your writing need a professional polish? Let's get rid of those comma splices together! I'll proofread and edit your manuscript for grammar, mechanics, usage, paragraph structure, sentence structure, word choice, and anything specific you feel you need help with. I can also provide developmental editing where we look at content and structure as well. I provide extensive written feedback asynchronously and will also conference with you and walk you through revisions if desired. I have taught English on the secondary level (NYS permanent license English 7-12, although I have also taught 6th grade). Currently I am an English professor who teaches writing classes, and in both capacities I've directly taught grammar and mechanics, AND I'm a published writer, so I have been on both sides of the desk! As a writer, I have also beta read and proofread for other writers. Message me to discuss how I can help you make your writing shine!
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I happen to love public speaking -- and podiums -- myself, and I can help you become as comfortable as I am speaking in front of a crowd. I have trained students for oratorical contests on the secondary level. As an English and Communication Studies professor, I have taught Introduction to Human Communication, which is a required public speaking course for many majors. I find great fulfillment in teaching students how to build confidence through the power of their words and techniques to manage stage fright, as the ability to speak comfortably and confidently in public is important in all careers. Students in my course research, write outlines for, and perform personal, informative, and persuasive speeches. I also teach Communication for Professionals. If you are struggling with stage fright, confidence, active listening, writing or delivering speeches, or communicating effectively in the workplace, message me to discuss how I can support you.
Reading

Reading

I am an English professor who also taught on the secondary level (NYS permanent license English 7-12, although I also taught 6th grade), a published writer, and an avid reader with more books than I have shelves for. On the secondary level, I successfully taught reading comprehension skills for both literature and non-fiction. For example, in literature my students became adept at analyzing characterization, theme, conflict, making inferences, drawing conclusions, and making text-to-self and text-to-world connections. For non-fiction we used text features and fun strategies such as textmapping to find and evaluate information, and my students learned how to identify and use text structures such as compare/contrast, sequence, description, cause/effect. My current undergraduate course, Children's Literature, is a required course for Child Study majors, and so I now teach future teachers how to incorporate reading strategies into their lessons. Message me to discuss how I can best support your reading journey! I look forward to working with you.

I am a former middle school ELA teacher with a NYS permanent teaching license in English 7-12, and I currently teach on the college undergraduate level as a Senior Lecturer in English and Communication Studies, with courses including the freshman writing course required in most universities, creative writing, and writing for professionals. I am also a published writer and was a finalist for a grant from the Speculative Literature Foundation. I am passionate about cultivating young people’s unique writing voices, and I am an expert teacher for writing structure. My goals are to ease the stress of the writing process, help students gain confidence in their writing, and make the experience a positive and successful one – wherever they are in the writing process! I offer coaching for various middle school, high school, and undergraduate writing, including persuasive writing, non-fiction and literature analysis, critical writing, creative writing, personal narratives, the AP Lang and AP Lit essays, and college application essays.
