My name is John. I am a 68 year old retiree who enjoys working with high school students to improve their algebra and geometry skills. I have been doing on-line tutoring for 4 years and believe I’ve helped several students improve their grades while also keeping my own cognitive skills refreshed in retirement. I also have previous experience as a substitute teacher and teaching religious education.
My online tutoring experience includes 2 years of Algebra 1 and Geometry with approx. 5 different students and 4 years teaching a special needs student in Algebra, Geometry, History, Public Policy and Economics. My general approach for online algebra and geometry uses a one-on-one face to face (with file sharing) platform (e.g., Google Meet) and an instruction board (e.g., Remind platform, whiteboard, jam board). Each session involves review/dual completion of the student’s current homework assignments or supplement of student’s current class work assignments using problems I provide (e.g., from Delta Math or GeoGebra).
My education and work experience has helped me understand the importance of basic math skills in a science based professional job environment. This includes a BS from Cornell University with specialization in Soil Chemistry, post grad coursework in Materials Science, Radiochemistry, General Education, Management and Religious Education, 30+ years working in Nuclear Power specializing in Chemistry and System Engineering.
