About Dana

I displayed a high degree of analytical and writing skill to complete my dissertation for
the PhD in music thery and composition I acquired from NYU. During the following 4 years, I taught
at various univerasities and colleges including NYU, SUNY at Fredonia, and Kingsborough Community College.
I received good reviews from my students and they sometimes remarked on the breadth of my knowledge ("He knows more than the book"), They gave me plenty of experience in correcting the style and organization of their essays.

Following my teaching career, I spent 2 years on Wall Street producing stock reports, testing my ability to write focused analyses quickly. (I had to research and write a four-page report just about every day.) The spreadsheet estimates exercized my mathematical faculties. I have always had an aptitude in these areas, scoring 770 Verbal, 750 Math and 730 Analytical on the GRE.

I use a positive approach in tutoring which I learned from the way my mother approached my education: praise any advancement and encouragea the student after a setback. The tutor should be an exemplar of the joy of learning because ultimately the student should find learning enjoyable, something to look forward to for the rest of his/her life.

In addition to English and math, I feel comfortable teaching music theory and composition, general history, and literature.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Greek

Modern Greek

I grew up in a Greek speaking household. (My mother was Greek). As a boy I attended the Greek school at the church. From 1992-1995 I lived in Greece where I taught music theory in Greek. I continue to correspond in Greek with my Greek friends. In January while on vacation in Athens I lectured in Greek at the Musical High School.

MCAT

Passing levels 1-3 of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Examination, the gold standard for financial analysis, qualifies me to teach the quantitative sections of the MCAT. In addition, I spent 2 years on Wall Street at Argus Research actually applying quantitative techniques in the preparation of stock reports.

I have had an extensive teaching career during which I was required to mark student papers for form, cogency of argument, and grammar. This has prepared me to teach the Verbal sections of the MCAT. NYU and SUNY at Fredonia are some of the institutions at which I have taught.

Music History

I taught Music Appreciation for 3 years at Kingsborough Community College as an Adjunct Professor. As a Visiting Professor at SUNY at Fredonia I taught a 2 semester course in Music History for music majors as well as a semester of World Music. I also taught an Intro to Music History at Cooper Union.
As a graduate student at NYU I took intensive courses in Medieval and Classical Music. I also assisted in teaching courses in Renaissance and Romantic Music. My doctoral dissertation was a formal analysis of the twentieth century Italian Composer, Luigi Dallapiccola.

Piano

I have a Ph.D. from NYU in Music Theory and Composition. I have written many solo piano pieces some of which have been performed at high profile venues like BargeMusic (Brooklyn, NY) and Merkin Hall (Manhattan) in NYC. For those performances I have coached the performers in the correct interpretation of my work. I have also taught piano performance in conservatory in Athens, Greece.

Great Tutor — Dana has been tutoring my son for the SAT and SAT II in math for the last month or so. He is a great, caring, and knowledgeable tutor. My son does not click with many teachers but Dana has established a great relationship with him. I highly recommend Dana. ...
